What a huge loss! I bet the fire started with the heat lights over the chicks. If so- a good lesson to us all.

Just down the road from me are a family that have 6 KFC chicken operations and the barns get 20,000 chicks evey 7 weeks

What is horrible is that these sort of fires happen too often. They can also likely be prevented if these sort of operations had sprinkler systems installed in the barns.

Which raises the issue of the value of animals to some people. They are not willing to go the distance to care for them properly and keep them safe and having said that, I'm sure they weren't ever going to see the light of day either.

Oh, so sad!

Speaking of raising chickens in these conditions, I saw an interesting program on tv the other day. It showed a farm somewhere in Alberta which raised a variety of livestock but what I found interesting was their chicken operation. They had big buildings with large yards which they pulled around with tractors so the birds were rotated frequently onto fresh grass.
