Just wanted to let everyone know that the Vernon Piegon and Poultry Club has updated it's site with new info for this show.
The club is working hard to make this event the one to attend this year. So if you are interested at all in exhibition poultry mark the date on your calander -November 4-6 2011
Coop-in will be on the 4th and Judging on the 5th and people will be allowed to coop out as early as possible on Sunday as we want to get people on their way safely. We will be posting a schedule a bit closer to the show.

I would encourage as many people as possible to actually show your birds and we have commitments of people attending from B.C, Alberta, Sask., Manitoba, Ontario and Washington.
The club has hired two great poultry judges and are committed to add another if entries warrant it.

The club is also asking anyone who would like to donate a cash award from $5.00 and up for your favorite breed or class that would be great. Your donation goes directly to the exhibitor unless you specify other wise. It is very expensive to hold an event of this size and we are a small club. We are doing lots of door knocking to help raise funds for shavings, building rental, judges and everything else that goes into holding a show, never mind one as large as this one. We would be thrilled to have you show your support. All donors will be listed on our website as well as at the show and in the printed show book. Thanking you in advance. I can be contacted at my e-mail [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] about donations

We have our Host hotel which is about 10 mins from the show site with 2 bed- rooms at a very reasonable 59.60 including taxes. The banquet is in the works and the ribbions are ordered. We are also working on other awards that will go to winning exhibitors.

The club website is [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Going to try and get to the show with australorps and LF white cornish, maybe a barred rock or two. I have no idea how close to the standard they are, but what a great way to find out and see and meet all sorts of folks.

My only deterent to getting there will be weather. Pretty much the only route for us is the Roger's Pass, and if it's snowing, well, not likely to make it. But can still make entries and contribute financially.

Thanks for the update Heather.

I'm thinking this is going to be a lovely event. Now to figure out who I may want to show in it. I have some promising buff orpingtons, but only one that might be of a good age to show. What is the youngest that a pullet could be to show anyways? These pullets would be 22 weeks old by then. Might bring some gold laced wyandottes, and perhaps a buckeye rooster. Anyways, it should be fun and a very informative event. Good on the club!!! Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Good morning Cynthia I would think around 6 months or so dependind on maturity of the bird as pullets will mature quicker than the boys.
The club is going to make this the best we can!!!

Heather-

I am wondering how a trio is judged? Are they also judged as individuals or just a group?
What would be the advantage to enter as a trio vs individually?

Also can u clarify about entering a non standard colour such as splash? And my final question ( for now Wink is birchen not recognized as a colour of bantam Cochin?

Thank you!

Hi- Trios are judged as a group with the male carrying 50% of the trio and the females 25% each. So you should have an excellent male and the two females should match closely. If any one of the 3 is disqualied then the whole trio is DQed.
Remember that when the trio is judged and if and only if it has placed first as a trio, the judge can take a bird male or female out of that trio and make it Best of variety or Best of Breed. Now as to is it worth it to show trios -I do sometimes but it has to be a strong pen. As a judge I have placed birds coming from a trio very high even Class or Show Champion, but always remember that you should have a strong pen as if that trio dose not place first if there a more trio's a very good bird can get lost.

Non Standard colors are judged but can compete no further than their Variety so cannot compete for Best of Breed. In non standard colors it is an idea to put up a proposed standard of what the color is supposed to look like for the judge. While he can judge on breed type some of these new colors are so out there, a proposed std. is always nice assuming one is avilable which it should be or what would be the point?. Colors like Splash or others colors covered in the standard don't need this but there are some colors being developed that are not included in any standard, if you have one of those colors or breeds then a proposed standard can be helpful to the judge or other exhibtors.

Birchen Bantam Cochins were reconized in 1977 but it is not a standardized color in the Large fowl. Also remember there is an Actual birchen color and some that are black chickens with a bit of white in the neck(sort of pertending to be birchen's) So you should have a good look at what the pattern looks like and you should be able to find it on the web somewhere.

Hope this helps and you can attend the National.

Heather, good morning to you too! Hmm. The pullet will certainly be plenty old, that big girl, she was born November 1 last year, so will be in the hen class. If I bring a promising looking buff from the youngster group, she or he would be 22 weeks old, pretty close to 6 months, the cockerel, well, probably won't bring one, as he would be quite a juvenile still by then I would imagine. Still wondering what this dude is going to turn out like, he looks like a pullet, smiling. This is going to be a wonderful event, with so many of our forum friends there. Pretty sure Ethan is coming from Saskatchewan with birds in tow too, awesome...have a most beautiful and wonderful day, CynthiaM.

all Maran's egg show at the APA National poultry show and if you are interested in entering I will be putting an entry form up on the offical club site in a couple of days. the cost is 6 dollars and we just require 3 eggs. The eggs can be sent to me and I will ensure they are entered in the show. The Marans club is offering $20.00 for best eggs as well as a plaque from the Marans Club and ribbions as well. If the exhibitor is not there the prize will be mailed to them.
We will be having eggs also entered from the U.S, so should be fun.

We may possibly be having some fertile Marans eggs up for auction from high quality breeders in the U.S.,more info to follow on this.
Check out our club website for further info on the egg show and a entry form in a few days.
