I live on an acreage in a subdivision. We are spaced out for the most part among our neighbours, there are others that have horses, and a few with chickens so livestock in the area is nothing new. When we moved into the area, no one at the time had chickens, now there are 6 families in the area who have them.
This is the first ever noise complaint that I have ever received and not sure whom it came from.
When the county bylaw officer stopped by it was kind of funny cause he saw me, and shouted to get my attention, well that got the toms gobbling, and the more he would shout so I could hear him, the more the toms would gobble.
I finally walked over to him and asked who he was and why he was on our property. Anytime I would talk, the toms would Gobble lol, he would talk, they'd gobble. All the while there are roosters crowing and hens screaming the eggs song. So pretty much he came at the worst possible time, I hadn't fed anyone yet so they were all rather loud. LOL
He was very nice and thought it was cool that I did what I did, but at the same time we couldn't even talk until I started to fill feeders and topped up a few waterers. After that it was a bit quieter and then we were able to talk.
All he said is that there has been a noise complaint, the person who whined... err I mean reported me specifically mentioned Turkeys gobbling non stop, apparently at all hours of day and night.. I laughed at that and he just frowned at me.
I showed him I had them up for sale on Kijiji, Facebook, etc and he could care less, all he said was that I need to reduce the noise or I will face penalties. I never asked what kind of penalty but I imagine he was referring to disturbing the peace, so a fine of some sorts. I just kept smiling and said yes sir, I will do my best to re-home them right away.
Heck I even offered him one for free, told him to come back in a few hours and I would have one ready to go for the table! Nope, unless it was from the supermarket he doesn't trust it, "Not interested" and he insisted he would pass.
More or less he explained that there was an obvious noise concern, and I would agree they are very loud at times. See I enjoy the sound of turkeys getting rowdy over the sound of sirens or someone's car stereo bass thumping and rattling, to me a gang of gobbling toms is a much more pleasing sound.
I was told I have a few days to have them gone, another complaint will result in a visit from Animal control, which I thought was a little extreme, but I could see why, to an outsider it must have looked out of control. Then he told me that I am over the limit, that I have too many birds on the property, so many kilograms of "livestock" per acre. I brought up the bylaws on my Iphone and showed him that I am well within the allowed limit. I kind of got a little snarky and I told him that I was aware of the bylaws. I argued that my operation has been ongoing before the bylaws were revised in August 2013. That I don't do this for meat, I do this for conservation.
Honestly not sure where the discussion went from there, but he didn't say much more after that, might have been the fact that I Soap boxed about Heritage breeds and the importance they play in modern days... LOL During my rant, things got relatively quite, the birds were calmer I think he could see that I was trying to do the right thing.
He did comment on my light sussex and said they were the nicest looking chickens I had there, and he left with a smile on his face.
Bah....!
I don't want to give them away, but almost getting to that point. I could cull them but they are my pets
LOL
