I had a black Ameraucana cockerel and a blue hen.
Out came pretty much half and half blue and black as it is supposed to..yet one rooster, a blue one has started to develop some golden hackle feathers.  Where can this be coming from?

Sometimes it sneaks in there from previous generations... that's why you need to hold on to a few roosters for a bit to see how they feather out, and then choose future breeders from that, and then only the ones that conform to breed standards. I had a pretty blue amer hen from a black/blue breeding pair that had 1 gold feather on her wing. Didn't breed her. Good luck.

Blue birds and that leaky red. Called autosomal red. As a breeder of blue and black and splash cochins, basically in easy terms, this comes up. I have carefully chosen birds for breeding that did not have any smidgeon of this red leakage. It will come up again I am sure, but I don't breed from anything that has that leaking through. don't know enough even to comment much, but I know it happens in the blue birds, no matter the breed. I had three blue cochin cockerels last year that had a few blood red feathers show up, looked absolutely stunning, but they went for our dinner table Smile . Usually shows up more as a bronze or goldish looking feathers, this was blood red on one in particular. there were three males that showed this in 2013 breedings, only two, one male had it much more prevalent and very noticeable than the other one. I find with the blue cochins, that this leakage does not become overly noticeable until ABOUT the 16th week of life. And I find that the lighter the blues are, more prevalent. Have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Go to this thread to see the pictures I put on with the two males that had some very definite, definite expression of how this leaky gene can come through. This post was from last December I think (if memory serves) And there is a new post I made today to that thread to show how this leaky gene can be not as noticeable and was with the third cockerel grown on.
