I have been sitting on the vaccination fence for too long! I've been very lucky so far, but I'm not willing to keep playing the odds and putting my good breeding stock at risk.

So having made the decision to begin a vaccination program, I will start tomorrow by finding a vet who will order me in LT-IVAX. The eye-drop method sounds much less intimidating than injections.

One question, does this vaccine offer any protection from Mareks, or is it only for ILT? Is there any way to protect older chickens from Mareks, or is there only the day-old injection method?
I appreciate anyone's input and advice! Question

The ILT-IVAX is only an ILT vaccine. It is easy to administer and quick, I often do them all by myself, although it is nice to have help.
The only Marek's vaccine I know of is the injectable kind you do at day old age, you can do them older but if they have already been exposed to Marek's then it does them no good.
There is a Recombant ILT/Marek's day old vaccine but it requires liquid nitrogen for storage so not available for us small backyard breeders. I am hoping they will develop something soon that we can do our day old chicks with.
I am not sure how many vets can get it ordered in, they all use the same supply company and not sure if they have it in stock. You might be better off ordering it from Airdrie Poultry Specialists or the Canadian Poultry in BC.

Thank you for that good info, Hidden. I contacted the Poultry Specialists at Airdrie, and it sounds like they may be willing to ship a vial out to me. Just waiting to hear back from them. I'm done hatching for this year, so may have to look into the Marek's vaccine for next season.

Remember you will need to do a booster of the vaccine so better get 2 vials shipped out. You need to treat all the chicks over 4 weeks of age and then booster them again at 4-6 weeks.

msmall, I found the Northstar website: http://www.northstardoves.com/
I have bought legbands from them in the past, but had no idea they carried a line of health products for birds and pets. Best of all, they are located in Ponoka, which is only about 40 mins away for me!!
Thank you so much for mentioning them! I'll be contacting Northstar, and I'm sure before too long I'll be going for a little drive to check it out and do some shopping! cheers

Your very welcome - I always contact them when I am looking for something as they have been able to get me many things that I normally can't find and they ship which is great!
