I came across this neat chart that shows the different stages of chick development and thought I'd share. Smile

Fabulous! I'm going to try and print that.

What would the references to "transfer" mean?

What's an "inverted egg"?

Not sure also on "egg holding time" being insufficient.

Very timely as I'm going to open (ick) my non-hatchers tonight.

Giddyup: I think the references to transfer mean when the eggs are transferred from the incubator to the hatcher. And I assume by inverted they mean the eggs were positioned the wrong way/up side down. You got me on egg holding time. scratch

Eggs are often incubated in several machines by the commercial guy, then transferred into a hatcher that is easier to wash, that has small mesh wire for the chicks to learn to stand up, and deeper trays so the different lots don't get mixed up. Eggs inverted means big end down in the rack. Eggs set too soon means set while still warm and before they absorb enough oxygen to start properly. 2 or 3 hours outside the hen is about the minimum needed before setting..12 hours might be better.

Good post!

That's great Flicker. Very fascinating and day 19 is wild the way the embryo draws the remaining yolk sac into its abdomen.

Thank you.
