I'm about to reveal my ignorance one more time . I have another question about roostery stuff. I have that little bright spark, Henry the 8th who is a cochin bantam - always looks at me with his chest puffed up, head held as high as possible and eyeballs me down his beak in 100% suspicion - I will probably always be the enemy in his eyes . I like him a lot actually, he takes care of the girls well and tolerates the other known roosters in the same coop (the two Judy's who are dudes after all and another mix-up chicken).
So my question is this, do roosters always know other roosters or will they treat a rooster like a hen some times. I have a silkie bantam in with the cochins bantams (and few other diff blends) and we are still unclear about gender in this silkie. It is such a placid and get out of your way little peeper, cannot tell if it is a rooster or not and Henry hauls on this silkie's head like the known hens. I have not seen Henry riding any of the chickens yet. I think the silkie would be coming up to about 5 months now. Have occasionally seen the silkie do that flared out neck feather dance but I know this doesn't mean rooster necessarily - hens sometimes do that too I understand. We would really like to know if it is a rooster or not, have been waiting to hear the crow for ever! Want it to be a pullet actually and wonder if Henry would do the neck feather clamp down thing if it were another rooster. I hope this is an indicator. Otherwise, any clues as to how tot ell if your silkie is a rooster or a pullet? apart from crowing and egg laying of course . Ta.
