we have a large pond. last night it froze except for a little bit where the ducks were. I am worried about what is going to happen tonight. The temp is going down to -2. Unusually cold for this time of year on the coast. We haven't been able to get them off the pond and into their house for two weeks now. We want to move it and put a small fence around it so we can contain them when we feed them at sundown.but we have been swamped trying to get a building project finished and a driveway in before the rains really hit. They have been on the bottom of the list. I have a small fountain pump. I am thinking of putting it in there just to keep the water moving.

Well so far they haven't frozen yet. They are confined to a little open area where the creek flows in. I was up at 4 checking on them. We moved the house got half the fence up. we tried to get them in but gave up after a few attempts. How does everyone do it? How do you get them to go into a house when they don't want to. We have always had trouble getting them in but a couple of weeks ago they decided they weren't going to be chased off the pond anymore. Nothing we tried worked.  They are still terrified of us and run the other way even though we walk past the pond about fifty times a day, so we can't get within ten yards of them without spooking them. The geese are so easy and the chickens pretty much put themselves to bed. Are my ducks just weird or are they all like this? We thought we could just let them live around the pond and free range but it has been nothing but problems.

If it was my pond and my ducks I'd make a floating island out of something and put a little hut on it, filled with straw, and I'd attach a chain to the underside, with an anchor of some sort, and I'd throw that into the open spot on the pond. That way they could get inside if they wanted, they'd be safe from most predators, and you could sleep at night. I don't know how you'd get them in if you can't get to them to herd them.

Have you been feeding them on the ice?
If so don't for a few days then, move the feed
onto land and closer to their new house.
Or try making a trail of grain from the pond
edge to the house and wait for them to follow it.

How wide is the pond?
Could you take a long rope hang a bunch of tins
off it then start at the creek side with one person
on each end of the rope slowly walk it towards them
should scare them in the direction you want.
