For my Sara

Not just a cat to me

I remember the day we got you
So small and shy that day
You didn’t know what you would mean to me
But you helped in so many ways

You were our first go at parenting
And many spats you caused
But also many happy times
With the kneading of your paws

Your fur soaked up my tears
On many emotional days
You always looked me in the eye
As if to say “it’s ok”

Our time together is so special
I snuggle with you every day
And the memories we have made together
Will never go away.

18 years you have shown me
What life is all about
But I see your body failing you
But still there is a doubt

I need you close beside me
I’m having a hard time saying good bye
But every day the light seems to dim
In those beautiful blue eyes

I know I must be strong for us
I hear it in your voice
But yet my heart keeps breaking
To make the proper choice

I know the time is coming
And many tears I’ll cry
I just hope you will show me when
It is time to say good bye

I hope you know you mean the world to me
You have been a loyal friend of mine
I will always remember your saucy attitude
And our special snuggle time.

My heart goes out to you Jayme. 18 years is longer than many human relationships last.

Sorry for this loss. 18 years. That is amazing. THe cat was blessed to be with you, as much as you were blessed by her.

What a lovely tribute to your friend. And what a difficult time. I can only hope your Sara does show you clearly when the time comes, and I think she will. Animals are good that way. They don't hold us to blame or want us to feel guilt. So if you begin to feel like it's time, even if there are no different overt signs than you thought there were yesterday, it might be her telling you it's okay, she's ready (and she feels YOU are ready). Be strong, and take comfort in knowing you're making a humane and loving decision for a good and loyal family member.

Sara will let you know when she is ready and you are intuitive enough to realize it. But she will try to hang on if you are not ready to let her go. She loves you that much. It is never easy Jayme and I'm sorry you have to go through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Lou

Thanks everyone. She is very special to me and I thank you for your advise Lou and Farmchiq. It is never easy, have only had to make the decision twice before, and it is always so hard. We got her test results back with kidney and liver issues, hoping the meds will help give us a bit more time, but I am watching her and when the time comes I hopefully will be strong enough for us both to say good bye.

You touched Doug's heart with your poem as well. He is currently trying to tame a black and white stray and is feeling particularly sensitive to kitty issues right now.
