Hey Y'all, I have this 8 month old Buff Orp hen that sneezes. A lot. No discharge at all, but she seems to gasp a bit if we have to chase her to catch her, like she's having trouble breathing. Still eating well & not lethargic. Quarentined for about a week now. Not laying anymore though. She's the only one in the whole flock of about 25 birds that is affected. bounce Thoughts??

Some birds are just more suceptible to CRDs. In my flock the choice is treat with meds (and probably continue to treat) or cull.

I agree this this and just posted similar thoughts on the 'sick and dying chicks' thread.
Its good you separated her, but if it isn't all cleared up after a week I would hit it with an antibiotic. I always use a black zip tie on the leg of a chicken I have treated and If I notice the same one with health issues again I figure it has a poor immune system and cull it.

I've tried GSE & garlic in her water. Nothing. Gave her Ivomec in water 2 days. Still sneezing, but starting to lay eggs again (don't worry, not eating the eggs). She's my daughter's hen so culling is out of the question. Next? Tetracycline??

Baytril works like a hot gosh darn but you do have to get it from the vet.

I was impressed with Baytril. We put it in their water in liquid form. Vet said to keep their water away all night so that when they got their water in the morning with baytril in it they all drank eagerly and all got a fix. Would have to watch the bossy tarty ones allowed the other kids a chance to get in there. We only had to treat the newbie ones who were separated from the other main flock where the bossy chooks rule. Newbies not too cramped so everyone got easy access and also, not full of s--t, still pretty respectful of each other.

Baytril?? I'll have to find it. I found 1 vet who will order me some Tylan, but it costs upwards of $90 for 250 mL. Too rich for 1 hen.

goodness, that would have to be the princess and the pea of all hens, I am imagining it is good stuff at that price. Baytril was good for us, we treated 8 chickens and am having difficulty remembering the cost but was nowhere near $80. maybe 1/3 that but I just can't put a figure on it now.

BCBoy - I tried the Oxy-tetra for over a week with no improvement. I can get some baytril for under $20 from a vet. Any advice on dosage on the baytril? Orally or injectable??
