What exactly IS a rumpless chicken? I've seen Auracanas, obviously they have a butt, but it's like their tail feathers, instead of curling up in a dramatic sweep, swoosh downward in the opposite direction.

Is rumplessness (Rumplessness Stillskin, wasn't that a childhood story?) a tail feather condition or a body condition?

A few months back I hatched 9 eggs. They are all roosters. Of course.

One is white with blue/black skin. I have no white birds on my property, but here is this guy, odd man out.

One is all black. Black skin, black eyes, black feathers.

And one seems to be rumpless!  Either he is rumpless or is having some unfortunate fashion problem with his tail feathers. He is also very broad across the back, a stocky boy compared to the others, who are tall and gawky looking.

Any input on rumplessness would be appreciated.

The most common form of rumplessness, such as that found in Araucanas, is caused by lack of a coccyx, or the tail vertebra. It's said to be a dominant single gene trait, but it is, like most things in life, more complicated.

Those things look wrong. Chopped. My guy does not look like that! I guess he just has tail feathers the are more affected by gravity. He just has to stand out in some way.

Chickens without tails don't look right to me either.

I'd like to breed a chicken with a raptor tail *Nods*  Or a turkey with one.... that'd be cool.

I'm amazed by these rumpless birds, thought about them, but until I see one in person I shall carry no judgement.

I don't mind the rumplessness, but I do take issue with those weird whiskers!

I had a roo a few years back, he was great and so pretty. He did not have the long "whiskers" but did have cheek feathers.

Those whiskers ("ear tufts" is whet breeders call them) are plain nasty, IMO. Lethal gene; so mate two of them and 25% of offspring are dead in the shell. Why deliberately select and breed for a lethal? I MUCH prefer the muff and beard of the Ameraucanas.

Hmmm, good thing I wasn't breeding them. Maybe that is why they are rare:) I just know he was pretty, friendly and I liked him.

I agree about breeding lethal genes together, not my thing.
