Hey bckev,

The covered section of the tractor is 6' X 4' = 24 sq ft. Based on the theory that chickens need roughly 4sq ft each of coop floor space you could fit 6 Large fowl into this tractor, however I don't agree with that, the Alpine would comfortably fit 4-5 Large Fowl, and no more than 6 Bantams.

From personal experience, I would say no more than 5 large fowl.

Back when I first designed my A-Frames while they were in the prototype stage, I was using them as Breeding Pens/ Isolation pens for Rooster or Mamma hen and chicks.

I ran Orpingtons in mine ( pic taken a year or so ago)

I open the door on the run to let the free range during the day, they put them selves away at night, and I just lock them in until morning.

That is what worked for me.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Jonny. I found 4 large fowls, 1 rooster and 3 hens, is just right for my birds. I also like it for broodies!

Mr. Anvil, you are an amazing man and I totally love the design and look of your chicken tractors. May you sell many tractors and make a small fortune, smiling. Don't think so. I imagine that there is a very considerable amount of time and energy that go into making these. Good on you, my man!! Have that awesome day, CynthiaM.

I was thinking they would good small breeding pens, but how do you access the nest boxes. Is there a bottom in the house or do is it open to the ground?

Thanks,

Last year I made a total of 32 between both models, the Mini Alpine was the most popular at 20 constructed.
It takes me roughly 6 hours from start to finish if I make only one, but if I make a few at a time, I do them in steps. My best personal record was 6 in 14hrs...lol

It's something to keep my occupied, and help pay for my hobby of raising poultry.

Hey bckev,

Depending on what someone is after the nest box can be mounted anywhere in the coop or free standing. Here is a pic of an Alpine model I had made with an elevated nest box

Here is the same thing on the Mini Alpine

The floor is open on all these tractors, this way there is no mess to clean up on the inside, you just move them on to new ground, fresh grass and rake up the mess from the last spot.
Most people ask for wire mesh on the bottoms of the tractors.
