In a moment of weakness I bought some Sebright eggs to put in the bator. Well, they are now hatching, along with my huge Buff Orpingtons, White Chanteclers and Cochins! They are completely adorable, but I've never hatched or raised bantams before. I'm thinking they should be separated right away from the big chicks due to their little size. Question I hope someone can help me. I would hate to lose any due to being laid on or trampled.

I have been in a similar situation with Mille Fleur Booted Bantams. Too many standards can trample them when they're young. My solution was to keep them mostly separate. I would leave a couple of larger chicks with the bantams for some extra heat. When a new hatch came off, the bantams would stay with the new chicks. By that time, they were about the same size as newly hatched standards and they would teach the younger ones to eat and drink.

I would keep them in a seperate brooder, they really love to be 95 degrees the first week and I find they are a little weaker due to their tiny size and you have to make sure they are eating and drinking well. like the silkies I try to keep them back a week or so and then put them in with standards that are a couple weeks younger than they are(but about the same size now!)
I love my Gold Sebrights but alas have no rooster this year...

Thank you for that good advice, and for answering so quick! I'll move the large breeds to the outdoor brooder and keep the little guys in my temporary basement brooder. They are soooo cute with their little stripes...I'll have to post a picture!
