My new Blue Slates are settled in and
on Friday I got my first egg then another
on Sunday and one today. They don't
seem that big though and are very
teardrop shape. Are Turkeys like
chickens that lay little eggs to start?

My turkey eggs are teardrop shaped and tend to have very strong shells and freckled, but in different shades and patterns.

Yes, the hens start by laying eggs about the size of chicken eggs (that's when the teardrop shape helps!) but quickly start arriving full sized.

I'm still working on getting my Blue Slates to lay more regularly. They seem to start and stop from mid winter to mid summer, then stop entirely.

My boys call them "light bulb" eggs Laughing

My frequecy is scattered too. I found that my 1 hen is particular about where she lays and will stop if she can't lay there. But hopefully we I have them in there own pen all by themselves this spring they'll be able to settle and get busy.

When I first got turkeys I kept them in the hen house and they laid eggs anywhere - everywhere. Then the turkey house was built with 2 by 2 foot nest boxes and only the very young turkey hens every lay an egg anywhere but in a box (I can almost hear the "oops!). In fact the older hens seem to like to lay all their eggs in just one nest box.

As the song says, in nest boxes turkeys prefer being in the straw.
