I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how egg swaps work.

I have a dozen hatching eggs and you have a dozen hatching eggs. I mail mine to you and you mail yours to me. The swap needs two consenting partners, but could be many more.

Smile Yes, thank you. That would be an agreement between two people, but how do you do it on a larger basis say with 50 participants. Do you have people sign up, take names and generalities on what they want (large fowl, bantam, purebred, mix) and then match everyone up? Or I've seen swap chains where one person posts a swap another accepts and posts their own swap and so on. I was just looking for some guidance on how to handle the 'back end' of organizing a group swap, making sure everyone gets a swap and so on.

The less complicated the better.
Basically get a group of people that want to swap eggs, decide if there are rules for purebred eggs or not, bantams vs standards or if a mix is ok.
Then you put all the names into a hat and draw out in pairs, those people are paired up and swap eggs.
Set a time limit so people are not waiting months for their eggs, or allow the pairs to decide this umongst themselves.
It can be quite a headache to organize with too many people asking for too many specifics.

I agree Hidden. The best one I was in was a mystery swap. You could choose bantam or standard or mix and they had to be purebred. That was it, the hatch was a surprise. I enjoyed that.

I got my first EO's through an mystery egg swap. Lots of fun trying to guess what hatched out of those eggs. I still have all 4 of the hens and one rooster out of that hatch. I had 5 EO's hatch and 5 BLRW's. I liked those EO's so much that I got eggs 3 more times from that person the next year!
