Well it now looks like I have two
of my BLRW hens broody.
I have not seperated my breeds yet
so eggs would produce mixes.
Should I or shouldn't I?
I was going to seperate Feb 1 so
they could have just enough time
to hatch a batch which I would
sell as barnyard mix.
But at this time of year would
the chicks be ok in the barn or
should I bring them in the house
to a brooder?

I would be tempted to break them now and then they will go broody again when you have eggs you want to hatch. If you let them brood now, 3 weeks to hatch and then 5 weeks to raise and then the broody moult to get through. If you break them now they will come back into lay and then go broody again, you know they will, and you can hatch eggs you want.

Yes, I agree, I would wait and do it that way. I know it's so tempting to get it going right now and have chicks to look forward to in a few weeks to break up the winter blahs, but it would probably work out better to wait IMHO Smile

My Karona (A discussion with her chickens)

Oh my little broody one, broody one
When you gonna give me some eggs, Karona
Are my chickens really done, really done
Laying eggs, I'm sure they are this time, Karona

Never gonna stop, wanting eggs, Such a broody group,
always waiting up
For those eggs in my old farm coop,
My, my, my, i yi woo My, my, my, my, Karona

Come a little closer huh, ah will ya huh,
Close enough to look in my nest, Karona
Keeping them a mystery gets to me
Hatching is the thing I do best, Karona

When you gonna give me eggs
Give me eggs
It's just a matter of time Karona
Is it just destiny, destiny
Or will I stay broody all the time Karona

(With apologies to The Knack for cleaning up their song a little)

Well I gave one of the hen 10 eggs today.
I have tried breaking her broodyness but
no luck so I will let her go. But if she
comes off in the next day of so that's it.

I always give in. I think I will try to break them of it but I just keep putting it off because I don't like doing it. After about a week or so, I can't stand it and throw some eggs under her. She's happy and so far it hasn't been a problem for me. What is the broody moult?

Have fun with the new chicks in 21 days! Very Happy

Broodies usually have at least a partial moult when they are finishe doing their thing.
