When do you generally separate the cockerals and pullets, and what about the smaller boys? I can pick out the odd roo, the cuckoo marans I can tell, some yet to be determined. When do heritage boys go off starter and onto finisher, and will this impact the "keepers"? What about the bullies, do you let them be bullies or throw them in with older birds? When I had one breed all one age I didn't seem to have the bully problem. But the saying "birds of a feather, flock together is apparently true". I have the three amigo's, three Australorps, who were being terrors (I think they are pullets but still not sure)...and the bigger Australorp in the big chick pen is also a nuisance bully (he's a roo). The three amigos were put in with the bigger chicks, now they are being terrorized! The Americaunas are beating on the Wellies and Barnies. They are 4-6 weeks old now. They are in tractors with day-time runs, they have clean pens with adequate space, and more space during the day. I have one more tractor almost done and I can do one more division, and would like that to be the final separating for a while, or will I just be juggling till freezer-time?

I was just thinking about this same question this morning. Up until now I've kept separate pens based on age groups...brooder house for up to 4 weeks, one pen for 4-6 week olds, and one pen for older youths. Also the laying hens and have thier own pen with a rooster or 2 that can get along.

Now that I've reduced numbers a bit and most of the 2012 chicks are old enough to be together, its time to do some re-organizing for the best use of space.

It mostly comes down to feeding requirements. while the youngsters are still growing they need higher protein grower rations than layers, so I still need to be able to feed them separately.
At about 14 - 16 weeks old its a good time to start separating roosters from pullets and introducing young roos to the older, established roos so they can learn to live together. A rooster pen worked well for me last year up until late in the winter when some serious scrapping started to happen.
its all about what you have available for space and how you can best use it I guess.
