HI everyone. I have not posted for awhile. I was getting very
discouraged with my luck with chickens. I have had nothing hatch
for me . You all know my partridge silkie troubles. And I am
tired of stupid people but that could be another long rant.. I
have read all your posts and PM'd a few people and figured I had
better get into the swing of things again. I have had no fertile eggs
out of my barred rock rooster. I sold all my hatchery buff orpingtons
because I had eggs come unexpectedly from a show flock.. Nineteen eggs
and only one hatched. sigh. The guy sent more and some
Ass&*(^&*( drove over the box on its way here.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
31 more eggs came . 6 were broken. when candled there were 7
clear , 2 unknowns, and 3 good of one breed. one clear and 11 good of
the other breed. We'll see what hatches in the next day or 2. And
to top it all off I bred my boxer bitch with frozen semen and she
didn't have pups.

I am writing to ask how the auction or sale was run with the show last
December in Alberta. Can't remember the place. If anybody can let me
know how it went I would appreciate it Geri

We tried something that has been done at a couple of big US shows. We had a sepperate area where peole rented show cage space to put thier birds in. They could sell bird from the For Sale row, those birds could go home at any time. Birds in the show were also for sale, but they could not leave until Sunday after coop out.

It was an intersting experiment. We learned a lot. It worked fairly well but the space was too small, we undersetimated how much would be brought for sale. People were supposed to only put a few birds in a cage at a time, there was to be no crowding. Well that didnt work. Some people jammed in as many birds as posible.

We are not sure how we will be handling it this year, it could be something similar but there would be more spae alloted, or it could be infividual booths or it could be a combination of both. Many people did presales and brought birds to the show.

There will also be for sale signs to hang on the cages of birds that are being shown next time, and these will be handed out right away on friday, so people will know what show birds are for sale as soon as possible.

This is dreadful that you have had such horrible issue with hatching eggs. I think you are talking about me and this is even more awful for you. You saw how well the eggs were wrapped and packed. Not slighting you. I was apalled when you told me that the eggs came by air. I had told the post office I wanted them shipped by ground only, as I do not trust the air sending. This is why, horrible hatches from air shipped. And how on this good green earth could ANYTHING have broken the way I wrapped the eggs. Now I am really bothered by air shipment and will only ship to BC and Alberta as I know I can trust Greyhound. In the years I have shipped Greyhound and the eggs have never, once had an issue with breakage, sigh...I am annoyed with this outcome. I think it is the air pressure of the flight. Some send eggs, I guess and they are OK. But doubt it. I had 27 eggs shipped from Ontario and 10 actually hatched, sigh. Blah. So, you have 3 good of the buckeye and 11 good of the buff orpington. Awful, just awful. We will talk more in a PM about this and make things good. Gads, I hope that you can at least get a trio of buckeyes and a couple of trios of buff orpingtons out of the chicks. I remember you telling me when you phoned me about the loss of the exhibition line birds' eggs and the box being crushed. Blah. (blah seems to be a good word today Very Happy ) That is just awful, just awful. So Geri, I hope to our lucky stars that something good comes of the hatch that is in progress. When are they due anyways. Do keep posting about how the hatch comes, and if it comes to fruition, also pictures, we love to see pictures. With that, do try to have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Have you not been posting because you have been so sad? Please keep your chin up, there must be other ways to get baby fuzzy butts. Maybe someone breeding your desired breeds closer to home??? Ask around, never give up.

I know Chantecler eh? has beautiful buckeyes, he is in southwest Saskatchewan. Why don't you give him a message and see if he can get some eggs up to you, that is so much closer. Syble is in Ontario, she has a most beautiful line of buff orpington. I was going to myself, get eggs from her, but scared to death of the cost of flight from Ontario to here and the horrible results. It cost me about $100 freight for shipment for my eggs to here. With only 10 hatching, that was a very expensive bunch of chicks to hatch. $48 for eggs, then the frieght, blah!!

Blah, I must be in blah mode this morning. This too is awful to hear. How on earth could anyone in the right conscious put too many birds in a cage. Overcrowding is just the worst thing on the earth. Picture the heat in there, even if the cages are open, stressed out birds are just a bad thing. I think that the birds that were overcrowded should have been given back to the owner, to diminish numbers. Period. The owners MUST have had something that the birds came in, sigh. I am feeling a little disheartened about this and this is a bad thing to hear. No excuse for that, in my mind. And should not have been allowed. Wondering if I should just keep my thoughts to myself, but then that would be wrong, in my mind's eye. We are here to help others, to express opinion and sometimes opinions are expressed. This was not a nice thing to read about. Have a great day, CynthiaM.

I should have been more clear.

The cage spaces we were renting out were show cage, so all wire.
There was no overheating, and if there had been anything that looked distressed we would hav removed the birds.
The rules were 1 or 2 standard birds per standard cage, and 1 to 5 bantam birds per cage, depending on the size of the bird.
The Standard birds were not really a problem, it was predominantly with the bantams, quail, pigeons where people put in more than they should have. They were supposed to have kept extra birds in thier carriers, then as the displayed birds sold, they would be able to put out more birds for display.

There was no over heating, no bird were injjured, but there were more birds per cage than we had alloted.
We are a NEW group and trying new things. We are trying to solve the problems we see elsewhere by doing things differently. We are still learning.

CHB would do this again, but we have learned things and it would be in a more open and visible area and we would have someone devoted directly to just that. We did not anticipate the number of for sale birds that would be there.

You must be very down today, it does not sound like you normally do.

Oh Arctic, you read things like a book, sorry, did not mean to come across as grumpy. I am so happy that you clarified your statements that you had made earlier about the overcrowding. The picture that you painted was not very good, and it conjured up some ugly pictures in my mind's eye. And trust me, that is not hard to do, I have the wildest imagination Sad sometimes. Now that you have clarified what you said, it sounds like it was not so bad with the overcrowding and things were taken care of nicely. Now that was nice to hear and unmudded my muddied mind. Thankyou for that, that was a good thing to read. Now off to a good day I hope. Have a beautiful day wish to everyone, CynthiaM.

It wasnt so bad, it was more annoying than anything else, and we had so many more sellers than expected that we had really narrow aisles.

Im a prairie girl, I like S P A C E !

Wll here is something to give you a smile. It is just too joyous and happy and wonderful. And you have to watch the whole thing. It really is great.
It loads really quickly but is best enjoyed without the cheesy misic so turn off the volume!
