I think, and I mean think, my chickens molt in the fall. I haven't had chickens not lay in the spring before, but choose not to in the fall. Last year was a big molt for many. Some didn't even molt so much that I really noticed it. Think that cochins are so full of feathers that when they molt it is barely noticed, well, except for the neck, they looked like naked neck turkens, smiling. So, thinking that my breeds are fall molters. When I raised some buff orpingtons last year, born June 1, they came into lay in the middle of December (at 24 weeks old). That was perfect, and they haven't stopped laying. So I am thinking I will ALWAYS have a late spring hatch to ensure that I have eggs all year around, not sure if it will always work, but surely gonna give it a shot. Have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.
