I have a cool light candler I purchased from Berry Hill in Ontario, it is pretty good but corded so not really portable. I candle right at my incubator so not an issue for me.
I have heard good things about these candlers from Brinsea,Egg candler OvaScope72
or this one is the basic candler Egg candler OvaView%20lores_2Aweb there is a place out of BC that sells brinsea and I have heard customer service is very good.

chantecler_eh? bought a Brinsea high intensity egg candler(like the yellow one in pic) at Wetaskiwin, it is excellent for seeing into tan or white eggs even in light but those mottled dark eggs are more tricky.

I bought the Brinsea candler above and really like it. The flat yellow part makes it easy to handle while candling. It is the most intense light availabe from them but don't expect to be able to see into dark shelled eggs like the Marans. I'm not able to. Not sure if there is one for that dark an egg. But want to stress it's awesome for medium brown and green/blue eggs.

And http://www.cbotkin.ca/ who sells it gives exceptional service.

I bought a Sportsman Xtreme (the small one) high intensity LED flashlight from WalMart yesterday - 80 Lumens for $19.97. I could see everything!! It's small enough for the egg to sit on top, perfect fit, it was exciting!! Very Happy

I only have the EE's & Orps - so green shells which are supposed to be difficult and I can see easily through those, not sure about a dark brown egg Question You should try mine out on your maran eggs...
