Have you ever been locked in the henhouse? Well, I went out to my laying pen after supper to check on the girls and gather the eggs. Since these girls are very pushy and alwaysI try to escape as soon as I turn my back to gather the eggs, I gave the door an extra hard pull to make sure it was shut tight.(First mistake) I gathered the eggs and put them in my pockets since I had not brought a pail with me (Second mistake). The pen has a top button that closes down over the top of the door and it has become loose lately, but I haven't taken the time to fix it (oops, another mistake). Well, you know how it went! When I tried to get the door open I was solidly shut in. No amount of kicking or pounding would budge that top button. I could only push the bottom part of the door out enough to peak out and yell but no one from the house could hear me. The only one who heard was my 6 month old german shepherd pup who promptly came over and stuck her head through the space at the bottom of the door where I was trying to push. Then she squeezed herself through the space and there we were, the two of us, stuck in the pen. The roo and his girls fled to the safety of the back end of their large yard. I just know they were thinking "That human has gone insane!" Then Susie, my dog, must have agreed with them because she squeezed out the pop door and stood in the yard with just her head peeking back in the pen.
By this time, I was imagining a long evening spent with the chickens. When would anyone miss me? Would they just think I had gone to bed early as I have a sinus head cold and have been feeling feverish today. However, my guardian angel came to my rescue My sister happened to come into the porch of the house which has a window facing the henpen. She said she notices a very strange sight. The bottom door of the henpen kept bouncing out, then going back in again. At first, she wondered if the dog had got herself stuck in the pen but as she watched, she noticed a human foot coming in and out with the door. Thankfully, sister to the rescue and only after only about 15 minutes of entrapment! Not so long, in once sense, but a very long time in another sense!
P.S. You can guess what happened to the eggs!
