As a joke, we put some plastic easter eggs...all colors, in the duck area to play a joke on our youngest daughter for easter morning. Well, she thought is was kind of funny, but we missed the big reveal. She saw them and didn't have much of a reaction I guess. Well, we left them in there and they fell between some bales. Today, the kids went out to let them out and noticed that one hen was missing. They searched around and found her in the hut, incubating her new "eggs" of all colors. How funny! I told them to leave them under her. Maybe she will start laying and hatch a few real ones. I am hoping...

Nothing like an easter duck! lol Doesn't lay the golden eggs...but sits on the rainbow ones.

If you leave her on the fake eggs she will become broody and will not lay any eggs for some time. Kind of a bad idea if you want her to lay eggs.

Okay, I'll get the kids to steal the eggs from the duck. Oh well. Shows what I know. Rolling Eyes Thanks, Dan!

We did get news of one of our guinea hens just laying her first egg this afternoon. She was just standing there looking at it when she was discovered. I think that we will steal it too and put down some straw in the place that we would prefer her laying. I guess that it is in the middle of the coop on the floor at the moment, and we have a nice hidden place for her to lay...that is, if she will lay there. If not, oh well. We will wait until our chicken hens get broody to put some under them and let them do the hatching. It sounds like that is the best plan of attack if we want keets. Comments?

Now I hear that one of the males is eating the egg. Oh well, then we have time to listen to advice if anyone has any on guineas and their eggs. I am sure that more eggs will be along shortly. Shocked Rolling Eyes

That is a cute story Very Happy Dan has it right and if she keeps the eggs and decides to sit she will go broody and quit laying for you but having them to sit on for a couple days may have given her the idea that it's time to lay some eggs Very Happy

We will put only one back and watch for signs of broodiness in the duck.

I want to do this for our new hens. Nobody is laying there yet and it would be nice to have eggs in a nest instead of on the floor.

Because I had heard of this for chickens, I wondered what these ducks might do if we left the plastic eggs in there. I really didn't expect them to actually do anything with them. If it happens to make her broody and we can't get it back, it isn't a big deal. We have 7 others who should still lay for us, and I can imagine that even with 7 muscovy hens, it will net us a big bunch of eggs & little ones.

Would a guinea have done the same if we had put little ones in a certain spot in their coop?

After all is said and done, we did leave some plastic eggs in the coop in general. It turns out that they broke 2 in half moving them around, but one orange one has made it into a nest again and as of yesterday, there were 10 eggs with it. So, the rainbow saga continues.
