I was glad to be a part of the Poultry Display that Canadian Heritage Breeds put on for a Seniors Home in Red Deer this past friday.
The residence were so excited to see the chickens we brought. They spent the morning reminiscing about their childhood and their experiences with poultry. Three ladies sat on the couch beside the display and watched the birds for well over an hour.

The Barred Plymouth Rock was one of the favorites with the seniors. One lady was telling me about her family used to keep a flock of 4000 Barred Rocks for supplying fertile eggs for a hatchery in northern ontario in the 1950's. Could you imagine a flock of 4000 Barred Rocks...

This display has been the most rewarding thing I have done with my birds. Steve is going to post some pictures of the day.

Talking to seniors in a lot of ways brings the heritage breeds to life.

They were the breeds that the grew and understood. This history is just as important for us to grab on to.
I remember talking to my grandmother ( when she was alive) about farming and chickens. She often told me I was doing it the hard way and she would give me her life lesson.

Because of her, I am wanting to persue into a new breed. Well. new to me but has been around for a long time and disappearing.....New Hampsires.
Getting these birds will remind me of her .

Absolutely awesome work Kyle, Liz and Steve. I can just picture these happy seniors talking about their good old days. I know that Barred Rocks are always popular with the older generation. Keep 4000 Barred Rocks would have amazing. In those days they would have probably all been exhibition stock not the modified version we see now that people call Barred Rocks. Again good job.

That is such a nice thing to do. Not only good for heritage breeds but so good for the seniors who gave us these wonderful breeds.

oh that is so nice to see!
Good that they treat older adults w/some common sense and let them hold some live animals!
We are helping to plan a display for gr 4/5 students and the protocol is that we can't let them touch ANYTHING live in case they get sick (the kids!) tongue
