Hi all: I am wondering if there are butchers that do up chickens in the Calgary area? As I get more new laying hens (I'm planning this spring) I will want to start culling my older hens (and excess roosters) for the freezer. I'd rather not do it myself. What would be the minimum number you would need to take in order to make it worthwhile?

I don't know if there are any options close to Calgary...possibly a hutterite colony may do some custom butchering if you ask around.
Messinger Meats is about 2 1/2 hours north of Calgary located in the village of Mirror. I am really lucky that they are located close to where I live, so I take all my extra's there now. I used to do all my own butchering, but this is so convenient. There is no minimum number - you can bring 10 birds if you like. I've been really pleased with the results, nice clean birds, all vacuume packed, weighed, labeled and Gov't inspected.
(And I don't have all those feathers to rake up!!)

Thanks for the info Kathy. I'm actually north of Calgary by about and hour. Unfortunately, I'm also west, over past 22 (the Cowboy Trail) in the foothills. I'll have to decide whether it's worth the drive..... or maybe if someone knows of something closer. I may just opt to make a trip (or two) up that way.

I take mine out to the Hutterites by the town of Bieseker not far past Irricana. They have Government inspectors come and inspect each bird as they are processing it. They leave a metal tag on the wing showing the inspection number. It will kill the majority of your day unless you have something in the general area that you can do for several hours because they do it on a first come basis and only on certain days so you will need to be there about an hour early to be first in line. I have been a half hour early and have never been first in line. They do excellent quality and I would use them again . I have used them off and on for about 10 years or so. If you want their phone number just email me for it. My email is wonderbar53@hotmail.com

I drive to Messinger Meats at least 3 times a year.

I leave the house at 4. Drive 2 hours to get there by 6 and can be back ready for work at 8.
I will drive back the next day to pick up my frozen birds.
Well, worth the time and no mess.
Call me crazy!

Thanks all for your ideas. Now if I can get some chicks hatched for this spring and get some new layers going before winter then I'll be able to make use of some of my older hens for a different purpose.

How much does it cost to have each bird processed? This could be worth a trip to Beiseker.
