darn Dan... just processed all the roosters I got from your eggs. I ended up with one black copper hen so didnt need any of the half dozen roosters I had.... last year was the year for roosters, hopefully this year will be hens.

Thanks TripleJ, but I currently have Blue chicks which were hatched Feb 3rd but I need an adult or at least one old enough to breed now because all I have is Black Copper Roosters with blue and black hens which means I can't produce splash chicks until one of my blue chick boys grows up and I don't want to wait. I had a nice blue roo that I hatched last spring but he fell victim to a weasel a while ago before he was old enough to start breeding.

Grandma Art, I can't believe your bad luck. My Black/Blue Copper Marans were the one breed that seemed to give more pullets last year then cockerels.

If he is still alive and you do not want to sell him , what about renting him for a month or so. A jigalo kind of thing.

Glad to see you got the cockerels you needed Dan.
It is good that people over winter more than they need. Wish I had room to keep more cockerels than I do over winter. I am already down to bare minimum and I thought I had kept enough.

You are most definitely correct about that coopslave. I thought that I had kept enough but I think that in the future I will keep more roosters of each breed. Although I try to be an optimist some of the times and don't count on any losses from predators and stuff but then I am not being a realist. In the last month in a 4 day period a weasel killed 4 roosters and one hen. I could have afforded to loose more hens and not the roosters. So I have to ask myself? Why was the weasel going for the roosters? Was it because he wanted larger birds to get more blood from or was it that the roosters were protecting the hens and therefore put themselves in harms way.

When I was having fox trouble in Aus it was the roosters I was losing too. I think that they are doing their job for sure. Isn't it nice to know you are breeding birds with instincts to survive. It is sad to lose your cockerels, but good on em for doing their jobs and protecting the ladies!!!
