I had a recipe at one time on what to use on a skunked dog. My house dog, our JRT, just got skunked tonight while I was out feeding the lamb. (Glad it was him and not me, LOL). But he is quarantined to his backyard house until we get him clean...
I have gone the Tomato juice route before, didnt work, just made him a red stinky dog...
I have heard of Peroxide, soap and bakingsoda? But not sure if that is the right ingredients or not.
Any tried and true recipes out there???

I can't help but OMG I'm so sorry! NO skunks here on the island, I never "smelled the smell" until this summer when I drove by a roadkill one in Alberta.... never felt so sick from an aroma in my life! Probably didn't help that it was 30+ degrees outside! Eew...

Yes it is not pleasant at all. My white dog is yellow! He must have gotten full shot. But his buddy my LGD has very sore looking eyes, so guessing he was doing his job and the little guy got in the way!

Jayme, Mateo used to get skunked regularily! I found Dawn dishwashing liquid bath and then a second bath with an entire tube of Crest toothpaste ( paste not the gel) dissolved in a bucket of warm water then rinse and rub into the dog then lightly rinse with clear water and 'voila'! Works VERY well Smile
Tom juice just made him smell like a skunky ceasar....yuk!

Google says a whole bottle of hydrogen peroxide mixed with half box of baking soda and squirt of dish soap. Rub into DRY coat of dog, allow to sit a few minutes and rinse. Repeat if required. Obviously do NOT get this in your dog's eyes. I have no idea if this works. BUt they say water can make the smell worse...if that's possible. SO other stuff first, then water to rinse.

When I had an area rug with puppy pee dried on it, the carpet cleaner said not to use water because urine is crystalline. I would imagine (nothing but my thinking) that skunk spray is similar to urine, so this might be why. It liquifies the crystals and spreads "the love" so to speak.

Other than that, I'm afraid I have no experience with skunk spray. Good luck Jayme! I can't decide who is braver: The LGD, the JRT, or YOU!

Thanks everyone I will try it. My daughter reminded me I had a bottle of Skunk off from the vets from the last encounter, so when I am in town today I will pick up the toothpaste and dish soap, then do the peroxide and baking soda, and then bathe him clean in the skunk off. Poor guy, he loves to ram his face right up their backside...YUCK!

And to top it off, when we were out with a spotlight trying to located where he got sprayed and dispose of the critter we discovered we also have a BADGER! Badger The building the skunks generally hide under has been back filled with dirt...Major sign a badger is still under there. So no chores are getting done this am till I can see fully in bright morning light!

not fair...you really don't need two predators at once! ...they say where there are porcupines there are no skunks...and we have tons of porcupines here...thank goodness our dogs all seem to steer clear of them now...but still not sure about the puppy...i have watched our dogs around them and being cattle dogs they just keep circling them rather than getting too close, although they did get some quills each when they were younger...

Yes hoping mr badger moves on quickly. I know he is just holed up eating the skunks DH shot under there a couple weeks back and hadnt gotten the time to remove yet, so at least that will be cleaned up. But hopefully he leaves soon. We would affixiate him under there but worried it would go through the floor up into my birds, and that wouldnt be very good. Can't shoot him under there since there is a wall of dirt, and I was not so brave as to lie on my stomach and look under there today to see if he has moved on...
Our LGD was out working on two coyotes this am, my JRT is not very happy locked in the back yard either, but after skating today I will get him cleaned up and hopefully he can rejoin the family soon...

Eww, skunk stank is awful. We had one living under the back porch last fall for a few weeks and it was horrible. Thankfully it eventually moved on and the smell with it. I can't imagine being sprayed full in the face though, poor doggie. Hope you can get him scrubbed clean and smelling like roses, erm, I mean dog again. tongue And now a badger too? Yikes! You couldn't pay me enough to peek into that hole. pale Really hope he doesn't plan on staying....

This is what we did (on two separate occasions, dog didn't learn the first time I guess...haha) and we washed the dog once outside with the solution, then we brought him into the bathtub and washed him a second time. It worked really well.

The only other thing I would suggest is getting a soothing doggie shampoo for afterwards as the peroxide is hard on their skin.

Well the dog smells much better. I did the Peroxide/Soda/Soap first. Then the crest toothpaste mix (made him smell nice and minty fresh). Then finished off with the skunk off shampoo (Which is supposed to have skin protecting properties). Rinsed him well and since it is a nice day he is outside drying off. Hopefully when he is dry he is allowed in the house again. NOW the chore of washing all my clothes in the coat room....what a task that is going to be... I have tried fabreeze, boiling vinegar in a kettle (MIL Advice) and a candle, but it is just sticking to those clothes like nothing else..So all our chore clothes get to be refreshed...

I have tried the tomato juice and no it did not work at all. Once I put this baking soda/peroxide mix on him the smell dropped 90%. When I did the tomato juice I almost wanted to hurl. So definately knew not to use it this time. Plus my poor dog is White, and putting red on him turned him orange for a good while. LOL

This is too little too late for you, but years ago I had an indoor/outdoor cat that got sprayed up by a skunk. Phew! What a smell... We also had no success with tomato juice, HOWEVER we did use and have success with tomato soup. We scrubbed him, he scratched us, and we made him sit in the sink for aout 5 minutes, caked and plastered in gooey canned soup mix (We were lucky he was an orange cat).

We rinsed him off with cold(er) water and he just smelled like tomatoes, no more skunk.

try lemon scented dishsoap preferable dawn. They use it to deoil birds cause it cuts the oil and that is what the smell is based in from a skunks anal glands -so it does work somewhat. good luck.
