So, we have snow, quite a bit of snow. I think it's over 4ft deep now. And it's only January.

Last night we got quite the dump of snow. This morning it took me almost 2 hours to shovel the path to the chicken house, and shovel off the deck. The nice thing about being out there is it was lovely and quiet (now that I think of it I haven't even seen a train go by today), and I could hear avalanches while I was shoveling. It was too clouded in to see the mountain, but still, I really enjoy hearing them.

I took this picture on January 10th.

This is this morning. There is a fence post under that rooster, I swear. I had to brush the snow off it. But I think he is actually in the second post in the first picture. But they are pretty much the same height. It sort of gives you an idea. He wasn't happy to be drug out in the snow. Droopy pouty tail... hee hee. I had to wade through the snow to get him there.

Yah, for the rooster! He looks seriously rooked in that second shot.

Great comparision Silkie. That's a lot of work! Do you think the absence of the train might be due to snow on the tracks in the mountains?

I won't mind if we get more snow here - we've only had a total of about a foot all winter, and the first 1/2 of that was mostly gone when the next bit fell - buy you can keep your 4' up there, thank you! sunny

Some people around our area are worried about the lack of snow- probably the same people that worry when we have lots. We would take some if we could find a very economically method of shipping.

Wow that is a lot of snow...we have been without much this year, just leads me to think we are in for a big dump soon, if not hopefully we get some moisture in the spring.

I'm here to tell you - all you need to do is tell SilkieBantam to KEEP HER SNOW and it will start falling on you. At least that's how it happened here. cheers

Well, we've actually had lots of snow this winter, but it keeps raining to bring the snow level down. A friend at the bus stop this morning told me that she heard that if you added up the snowfall (not including rain) that we've had so far this winter, it's around 18 ft, but I don't know if that's true or not. Just hear-say. I just keep thinking that all the rain we've had has been snow up there on the mountains. Apparently the snow pack in the area is way above normal.

Her little guy fell off the snowbank they were playing on this morning and got stuck just about right upside down. We just seen his legs sticking out, kicking, so we dug him out. His face was packed with snow. Poor little guy.

I do think that the trains haven't been going by today because of the avalanche risk... Probably not a good day for me to hike down the tracks to see if it is across the tracks... (Although that would be neat to see).

My neighbor and I went on a snow shoe adventure just over a week ago. Lots of fun, but my hip joints were sore the next day. lol Makes me think twice.

I saw the snowfall warning last night for your area and thought phew thankfully not much snow here.... Must have jinxed us because boy is it blowing snow now! Power just went out and they estimate it'll be back on in 3hrs so guess it'll be cereal for dinner tonight! Our BBQ isn't sheltered enough so with the high winds even it's not an option. Snow sure looks beautiful in pictures but unless I'm going up the mountain to ski I'm just not a fan of the white stuff!!!

Wish we had more snow here, send it our way Silkie. I just got new snow shoes this year, not that great right now for any snow fun.
As always, your pictures are wonderful.

I'm sure there would be people down our way that would be happy to get a little of that snow. Winter forgot to happen here this year! The ski slope operators are NOT having a good time Mad

We check Terrace weather often Silkie because of my son living there and have been aware of all the precipitation you're getting. The photos confirm all that. Crazy! I understand the ski hill there has the most snow in North America this year, if I have the correct information.

Careful with your back with all that shovelling.

Wow. We don't have much at all and we aren't that far from you as the crow flies. We've had snow/rain today both of them sort of cancelling itself out and the thermometer is bouncing around from -2 to +2 - hope it doesn't get cold tonight or everything will be ice tomorrow. We're at 3000 ft - you must be higher?

I've heard that there is lots of snow up at the Ski Hill. A young fellow that runs the Cable Car goes there all the time and talks quite a bit about it.

Heda, You are actually much higher then we are. Terrace is only 217m. Usk usually gets more snow then town. But I think that the Terrace Area may get more snow, because we are a little closer to the coast, so get more precipitation which means more snow.

I'm glad to have power this morning. It started raining yesterday, and last night we had some strong winds. I thought the power would go out for sure. We're suppose to get a little more snow today, and the weather is supposed to warm up and rain this week. We'll see.

I'm heading for town today. I bet they blast the mountain while I'm gone. I love that. Hope I don't miss it.

I guess I always think of Bella Coola which is on the ocean and only gets rain.

Snow is going to be REALLy heavy if it rained last night - lucky you got your shovelling done when you did!

We have just the right amount here, thank you very much, don't really want any more. Probably close to 3 feet and that is just about right I think. I don't really want the 5 feet you are dealing with.

The thing that bothers me about all this snow, is I really need to clean my coops. But the spot where I bring my Coop cleanings is at the back of the property, and with all this snow, I can't get back there.

Now that it's warmed up and everything is thawed, it seems really damp in there. I try and not track snow in there, but it does get in there with me. But I would be wading through hip deep snow to get to the pile, dragging the sled of poo behind me.

Last year, when it froze so I could pull the sled on top of the snow it was a very dangerous job. There is a slope that you have to go down, and as I was running, pulling my big sled heaped with poo, my foot broke through and I got run down by the load of crap. Ha ha ha! Even I had to laugh at the humor in that.

I had to shovel off the roof of my mini coop and the snow that I had to walk through to get to it was past my crotch of soft stuff (there's an older layer underneath) I was looking at it thinking about how I would shovel it off since it is pretty high as it is, and the idea dawned on me. Get the kids sled, put that on top of the snow and stand on it. It worked perfect holding me up on top of the snow.

The other day. My mini coop in the snow.

Last night, we got about another 6 inches or so (judging by the deck) and I just heard we were supposed to be getting another foot or so. (hopefully they are wrong.)

Wow! all i can think is Wow! What an incredible dump of snow you have!

There are chickens in there? The plus side is is must be very insulating! But I can see the dilemma because it will be pretty hard to get air flow thus the dampness inside...
how about turning the chicken coop contents forkful at a time and trying to fluff them up a bit, maybe adding a little more dry bedding?
Of course I don't know how wet and heavy it is maybe that is impossible to do.. I have been turning the bedding under the roosts every couple days or so with a hay fork and adding a little more fresh straw, it smells pretty strong when I turn it up but then it airs out on the top layer and is much better and drier because it is warm enough I can leave the screen door open.

Oh, I don't have chickens in that mini-coop. I use that one during snow free months. I use if for a breeding pen or grow out pen or for extra roo's. I wish it were melted out, because I am dying to use it.

My main coop didn't seem bad before we had the cold snap, and I was turning it. But then it froze in there, and now that it thawed it's quite wet. Probably from the snow I and the kids tracked in too. I was using Peat in my house since spring, and really liked it because it kept dry, and smell free. But now it's packed and damp.

Does anyone put wide boards under the roosts to scrape off? Maybe this spring, I'll try something like that, so the poo doesn't accumulate under the roosting area.

Oh, and it actually just snowed a few inches during the night. It was just sort of drifted on the deck where I was looking. Phew! lol

That's incredible! We never get snow like that - but then we are on the "dry" side of the Coastals. Isn't it amazing what you can use a toboggan for? At the end of every winter I go and buy a plastic sled on sale - usually pay less than $10, and probably use it more than any child on a hillside in the next 12 months.

Be careful out there!

I've seen trays that go under perches that can be easily pulled out and scraped off.

Man, that is a lot of snow. We sure don't have as much as you. What we have is just about what I enjoy, close to 3 feet. Anymore, like what you have, just turns into very hard work.
I actually through scratch around the inside of the coope a couple times a week and let the chickens turn the bedding themselves.
It has warmed up here again (maybe the pullets will start laying again! Rolling Eyes ) so I think my coop will be a little damp inside too. I will add fresh shavings and scratch and let the girls do the work.

I had to laugh when I looked out at my chicken house this morning. It was a real winter wonderland out there. As in I "wonder" where my chicken house is!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Note to self: Next time building a chicken house, make the door of the end of the chicken house so the snow doesn't pile up in front of it.

My husband was nice enough to shovel the snow that slid of the roof this morning for me. I tweaked my arm yesterday tossing snow.

We had a few days with some rain so the snow packed down some. This morning we are getting snow, but the forecast is for rain for the rest of the week.

What I want is to see some sun for a few days. All summer and fall, we've had rain, rain, rain. Then winter came and we've had alternating snow and rain, and hardly any sun. I'm craving the sun so bad it hurts.

On the bright side, they are going to blast the snow off the mountain today by shooting the snow off the mountain from the highway. I think because it is so cloudy that they will punch the co-ordinance (sp) into the gun so it hits the mountain at the designated spots. Still, we will get to hear the big bangs! That's always exciting.

We got snow over night and this morning. Close to 6 inches I suspect. Hubby said it was clear skies at 3am.
I'm with you silkie, I would like some more sun too. I think we have had a lot more than you, but never enough for me.
