One of my hens goes backwards. Not sure when I first noticed it but she does do it everyday. Comes out of the coop, checks things out, then lowers/tucks back her head and scoots backwards. Then she'll stop and be fine. Might see her do it the odd time through the day. Otherwise seems perfectly healthy. Have been monitoring her weight and that's all fine.
What the heck?

Cool , and I thought it was only my chickens that did that once in a while. Seems sometimes someone just decides to tuck their head in and walk backwards. I think that they see something that makes them want to hide and they slither back to a safe place. That is my only thought here. I see it quite often, by the way, so don't think it is something wrong. I just think it is a bird that is trying to be invisible. I truthfully, always thought it was rather odd, but had seen it so many times over the years, maybe about 8 times, that I never really worried about it. Just an act the bird does. Never seen a rooster do it, only hens. Maybe they feel an egg coming on and they want to sneak away, after thinking better of coming outside, smiling. Nice observation, you will hear other replies, and will find it commonplace. Beautiful days, CynthiaM.
