Starting tonight, the Geminid Meteor Showers commence. They are weak now, but you should be able to see a few.
Being winter, they are not very popular, and most people don't know they are happening.
When we were kids, dad, my brother and I, would drive for hours, to the middle of nowhere, to a beautiful lake in August. We would stay there for 3-5 days in the middle of the wilderness, during a meteor shower. We would set up our sleeping bags on the beach of this lake, propping tarps over our bags with sticks, and fall asleep watching the hundreds upon hundreds of shooting stars.
The Geminid showers. start tonight, and get stronger until the 14th. The night of the 13th, is the best viewing night from dark until the moon rises, roughly in the 9PM range.
Of course those of us away from the city will see the most asteroids, approximately 100 per hour.
