At the CHB December Show in Red Deer this year we would like to introduce the Junior Poultry Showmanship Class.

The Poultry Showmanship Class is a contest where the youth will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of poultry as well as his/her ability to carry, examine and position their bird in and out of the cage for a judge.

The breeding or quality of the bird does not count, but its cleanliness, condition, freedom from parasites, health and vigour are important. In other words, the contestant will be mainly scored on those things he/she knows and how well they cared for the birds.

The showmanship event will be divided according to age and/or experience. Questions and knowledge of the poultry will also be age depended.

We will still have the normal Junior Class for Poultry and will be judge according to the normal APA/ABA standards. In this class juniors will only compete against juniors. A junior entry will not be allowed to compete in the open class; therefore the exhibitor must decide open or junior class.

The same bird can be entered in the junior class and showmanship class.

Excellent, very 4-H
I really appreciate the involvement that sportsmanship encourages and develops in the children.

This should be a great class! It is awesome to see how much the juniors know about their birds.

This is such good news.
It is so important to encourage the youth to take up this hobby and what better way to do that than a class just for them. I'm glad to hear they don't need top quality birds to compete. Usually my kid's favorite birds are not the "best" ones out in the pen. Smile

I could not agree more. The Jr classes should be about involving the kids and having them develop a keen interest in the hobby, not about yet another competition where they must strive to be Number One, to WIN. It is good to do something because you enjoy it, not just because you WIN>

She can show her RIR in Junior class or the open class not both. She can do Jr.Showmanship if the bird is entered in Junior classes or the open classes. I need to know if the chicken is a bantam or a standard size to help you with the entry. The banquet is definitely family friendly.

On the poultry entry form is a "List of show classes" in red. the entry info is there but I find entry forms complicated so it is great that we get to do some on the forum. The entry form asks for class, variety or breed, colour, sex of birds, number of birds. For the RIR the class would be American, the variety would be Rhode Island Red,colour would be red,sex would be C-for cock/rooster over a year,H-for hen over a year,K-for cockerel under a year,P-for pullet under a year.Number of birds in this case would be 1.Of course if you were entering 5 cockerels that were RIR the number would be 5. Keep the questions coming I'm on a roll now!! bounce cyclops

Tara is there divisions by age or will my 6 year old be competing against 17 year olds? Just wondering, she is pretty shy so trying to work her up to this, and I think it will be very intimtating for the younger kids to compete at such a high level?

So far, I am under the impression there is only a single showmanship class, which is the "Junior" showmanship event planned. So ages 9 to 11 years old. If we have a huge entry, the ages will be further divided to where 9 year old compete against only 9 year olds, ten year olds with ten year olds...you get the picture.

Hmmm, well if one of the show organizers could let me know what the class age will be that would be good, I have 2 under 9 so if it is 9-11 years old then I need to let them know now they are not in the showmanship... Which isnt the end of the world, they can watch and learn this year, and the older one can try next year if she wishes.
