Oh it's very nice having fruit trees in our yard but also a curse because if you look after them and spray you get amounts that can be mind boggling. When we moved here the trees were very neglected but with a bunch of pruning about 30% each year they have recovered and they have rewarded us with their bounty. The Apple and pear trees I speak are of older varieties so are huge trees, the type that orchards are taking out now.
Since we moved here we have planted another small orchard that has Golden Delicious Apples, a 5 type Apple tree, Red Haven Peach, Apricot, 3 different kinds of Cherry trees (Bing, Lapin and Sweetheart) Anjou Pear, Italitan Plum, and Grapes. All the fuit trees are of more dwarf types as I am sure as I age I will need them smaller trees.
It is amazing how well these smaller trees produce and of our young trees this year we had good crops of Peaches, a smaller crop of Apricots, Cherries for weeks and lots of grapes. I also produced the most delicious watermelon I ever tasted, so so sweet and my husband concurred, also Cantaloupe and honeydew melons. We have not brought any fruit this year which has been great. Starting in about a week I will be dehydrating any apples that are left for snacks this winter.
