I'm no expert by far, but to me, I see white on the outside edge of each feather. That should not be there. There should be a nice, evenly sized line outling each feather. On my BLRWs, every feather on them is laced, even their fuzz on their butts and legs. Wyandottes arnt cochins, but I assume that the same things apply with their lacing. With breeding, I have been told by the wise, that the coloring importance is in the roosters. The roosters genes control more of the color, where as the hens genes control the 'type'. It is very easy to cull for feathering. You need the correct type first, then worry about the feathering. But just remember that. If you have a hen with not perfect lacing, but she has very good type, and you breed her with a rooster with very nice lacing, then youre better off than a hen with good lacing and poor type, and a rooster with bad lacing and good type.. Shocked if that makes sense LOL I'm sure Rico will correct me if Im wrong silent

Would the frosting come out when they moult out of juvenile plumage? Or are they out of that already?

Hi,

Shelby you are right on, well said. Build the barn first then paint it. As for the lacing it does have lots of frosting on the outer edge which is not good. They might shed some of this frosting but not all of it. You need to check the males for their lacing to see what it looks like because color normally is controlled by the males providing it not on a dominate gene on the females. A dominating gene color would always control the color.

I'm so glad you posted this. I am new to the lacing thing, and didn't know about the frosting thing. I have 2 Silver Laced Cochins and just love them. I think one has better lacing than the other. I wish I could get a good Rooster.

Is it better to have more white in the center of the feather with a wider band of black at the edges? or a narrower center of white?

It seems Chickens with lacing just catch my eye! I'm new with the BLRW's and will look closly at their lacing, and check out the lacing on the Roosters closely.

At what age is it best to tell how good the lacing will be? Does the quality of lacing change after the first molt?

Triple J,

Would you mind if I posted a picture of my Cochins Lacing? One has more white then the other, and I'm curious as to which is better or more desirable.
