Hi all -

One of my cuckoo marans is not eating.  She is drinking.  She is losing weight but does not otherwise appear ill.  I thought maybe she had an impacted crop, but if she does, it's a pretty small impaction.

I have treated her for scaly leg mites - she has very feathered legs, and the mites were getting to her.

She isn't laying but is just coming out of a molt.  Her comb is a good colour red, so she doesn't appear to be anemic.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else would make her not eat?

Also, do you keep chicken anti-biotics on hand, and if so, what kind?

Cheers,
Bessie

Birds with impacted crops will continue to eat, because they are starving. So not eating does not indicate impacted crop.

If she seems otherwise bright, doing all the regular chicken things, roosting, scratching, showing interest in her surroundings, hanging out with the other chickens, then she is not sick and this might just be a 'thing' she'll get over. I hope. Sick chickens look sick and act sick. I have no suggestion other than wait and see and hope it's a phase that passes. Good luck.

Hi -

She didn't make it. Sad  I don't know what happened.  None of the other chickens got sick.  She stopped eating, and she was gone the next evening. I didn't notice anything leading up to this, and I only have 11, so  I wondered if she ate something poisonous.

Whatever it was, I hate losing a chicken.

Thanks,
Bessie

No, that was the thing. She looked good. Her comb was red, her feathers were all nice because she just came out of a molt.

That gapeworm looks awful!
