This should be a very helpful set of seminars.

I always like learning how keep the productivity in my standard bred birds. It is my goal to have a top quality flock both in the show room and in the kitchen!

Agreed Butterboy!  Some of the standard breeds of chickens seem to have suffered a loss of the utility traits that they were originally developed for.  It will be great to learn how to keep them as useful as they are beautiful!  Help

There has been lots of interest in these upcoming seminars, so apparently this topic is one that appeals to many others as well!  Some people have been asking for more information so I thought I'd offer some background and a few more details.
Canadian Heritage Breeds is always looking for new ways to promote the many benefits of the heritage breeds of poultry and livestock.  Educational seminars are a great way to encourage breeders and help them find success with their chosen breeds.
Jim Adkins of the Sustainable Poultry Network shares these same visions, so bringing him to Alberta to share his knowledge seemed like just the right fit!

While we don't have a list of the specifics that will be covered in each session, the Saturday class will be more general and geared towards the basics of nutrition, housing, breeding principles, and selection.  The second day, Sunday is a more advanced class for those who feel confident with the fundamentals of raising chickens, but are ready for more in-depth learning  to optimize the performance and profitability of their flock.

Both seminars are guaranteed to be enjoyable and filled with great information. Hands-on demonstrations with live chickens will be included in the seminars.  If you'd like to read more about the Sustainable Poultry Network, here is the website: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

And please feel free to ask anyone on the CHB board if you have any other questions. We’ll try to find out answers for you.
Hope to see you there!

Quite a few registrations for these seminars so far but there is still space for more participants and time to register for one or both! Seminars such as this one are few and far between in Western Canada and it may not be possible to arrange an opportunity like this one again anytime soon so we hope to see as many people as possible take advantage of this opportunity!

Jim Adkins has just arrived in Alberta and he is excited to share his expertise with us this weekend!  Those of us who are planning to attend the workshops are in for an incredible learning opportunity.  This will not be like any other poultry seminar that has been offered here in the past because the focus is on helping those of us who have specifically chosen to raise heritage breeds of poultry and turkeys. Maintaining a good dual purpose flock is not an easy task.  There is always a struggle to find that perfect balance of the utility traits (egg production and meaty carcass) while also breeding according to standard.
This is Jim's specialty, and he is here to share his knowledge.

Here is a little sneak preview of what we can expect for those who are already signed up.  And for those who are still on the fence, maybe this will help you decide to get registered for one or both seminars happening this weekend!  Registration is via the CHB website:  http://www.canadianheritagebreeds.com/

I am so glad I made time to attend the day one seminar and I really wish I could have stayed for the 2nd 1/2 day.

The first seminar really solidified for me how important and valuable the heritage breeds of poultry are; beauty and function all in one when they were developed and they need to be brought back to that again.

Jim really made me think about my goals and strategy when it comes to heritage poultry and gave me some new practical skills to apply when assessing my chickens.

For everyone that missed the seminar, I would watch the videos that have been uploaded to youtube. Very educational and lots of thing that I will use to asses my flock.
Thank KathyS!!!
