It was brought to my attention that new topics, Like Coops, Brooders, Feeders should be added to the general discussion board, what do the members think?
It would help with searching ideas for new members but would add more clutter to the board as well, what other topics would interest people if we did do it?

I think more topics, as long as they are in the right catorgories. I find it a challenge to sift through a forum to find what I need and often give up and go elsewhere (like google) rather than try to search for stuff. The easier to find, the more likely it will be used.

I don't want to go all insane with a million different boards, but one for Building Stuff (coops/brooders/feeders) would be good.

I wouldn't mind a section for recommended sellers, either. I have a few sellers I would recommend.

I agree...don't go insane...but you may want to rethink not having recommended sellers. There was a lot of problems with recommended sellers on ACE this summer. If people want recommendations, I would suggest they transact that off-site.

I agree with this one Sue, I will not be putting a recommended sellers list. I think when people are happy with service they will recommend others to new people, if unhappy they will not. This is a fairly unmoderated forum and that is a topic that would have to be monitored...

But I do like the idea of a building stuff area.

Good enough for me! I like how we're allowed to self-moderate on this site.

Is there a way to do sub categories?

I think a "building stuff topic" is a great idea.... love getting ideas from others!

Yes we can do sub categories I believe. How were you thinking coopslave?

I was wondering it you had a heading like Poultry Management and then when you clicked there you got Feeding, Coops, Waters whatever. Would keep the front page cleaner but still allow for more categories.
Just don't know if that is possible.

And what will happen to old threads? will someone have to trawl through them all to put them in their right new categories?

I would mind having a building stuff topic, but I don't think it is necessary for someone to go back and reassign old topics to the new category. The recommended sellers topic is a source of disagreements.

I would love a building topic! I agree if someone is looking for a specific breed and asks on here people will recommend breeders if they like the people they have purchased from!! A recommended sellers list can be good if strictly moderated, but can go bad way too quickly!!

I think a' How I Built It' topic would be great. BUT...people HAVE to put some clear and meaningful words in their title. This helps a lot to narrow a search.

For example: 'A use for old 2x4's', is a BAD title. It's too vague, it gives NO information about the post.

'Roosts made from recycled wood', is a GOOD title. It is clear, and tells you what to expect in the post. This would be easier to find with a search of roosts.

As long as posters take the time to be clear and descriptive in their titles, this could be a very handy heading to have.

Titles for topics are a whole other ball of worms. Don't get me started on vague useless titles or I may end up insulting people. Nothing worse than a title like, "What do you know about this?" See I have probably insulted someone already.

Now, names for categories is another matter altogether. I vote that Uno name them!

I ABSOLUTELY think that there should be categories, one can just ignore the categories. I find the search feature on here horrible to use, and many times the search does not even come up with what I am trying to search for, says "no topics found". The is crap, cause there are topics about stuff I look for. Sometimes, there are very, very specific things that one is looking for, and I think that if there were forums to find these very specific things, then they could easily be found. The forum that one is looking for stuff in would probably have very few threads in it and stuff could be found in quick order. Absolutely, make some little forums. Coop building (and that would entail things like nest boxes, feeders, waterers, etc., maybe one for specific issues, like worms (parasite), ), illnesses and some other little forums, not sure what, but I think maybe add as you are making new ones. For sure, this poll is very useful, and I advocate for this for surely. Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Would it not be easier to put up Sticky's or subcategory's under the useful links/information

I dislike stickies. I think they are a waste of space.

I agree that there should be a building section in the Discussions area. I don't think it should be broken down so much. Just 1 broad subject area.

As extra categories are a waste of space that is why I also suggested subcategory's which also take up space but does not add more excess categories.
we already have useful links and information

Personally, I don't like subcategories. Unless you actually go into a specific forum, like useful links, you do not see these categories. And I think that people that are looking for specific information, might not know to look for subcategories. I still think, like if there is only 2, like you created, those should be visible when you firstly look at all the categories, quickly at a glance, not having to go into each category and then find a sub-category. Just thinking of ease, of people to find stuff. We might know there are sub categories, but do others. I don't know, just me. But I do like the two new categories, just not where they are. Have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.
