Rules for Importing Poultry and Hatching Eggs from the US

You have to go to the link at the bottom for AIRS, then start with search "live poultry" andtypically less than 185 g and under 3 days. Then you select country and state of origin and purpose (breeding)... then the rules pop up.


Basically, for chicks and eggs there must be a health certificate-this is VS Form 17-6 that a vet fills out and then gives to the breeder. It gets sent with the eggs/chicks to a border crossing PO Office where they can be picked up and 'walked' across the border into Canada.

Make sure the border crossing has a vet that can check the paperwork.

If you find a breeder who is NPIP certified, they can use that towards all the requirements on the VS Form 17-6 but a vet still has to complete it. You still pick up chicks/hatching eggs at the border and 'walk' them across. I have only found a handful of breeders willing to do the paperwork and getting a vet out. ALso the vet has to be willing and understand the rules. Lots don't or confuse information.

I have just a couple things to ad. I have brought Dutch bantams in from Montana twice so have a little experience with it. One thing if your bringing in birds you have 30 days from the day of testing. They will not let it happen if you are 31 days after - I guess the birds explode or something? (HAHA) Also thankfully both times we had the completed form faxed to the vet in the crossing I was going through (Coutts in my case) and both times there were changes that he to be made on the form and signed (or initialed) by the vet. If I had gotten to the border and not had the form corrected I would have had to either take the back back, tried to get a hold of the vet to correct or left the birds at the border.

The birds or flocks must be certified prior to importation as follows:

1)Form VS 17-6 must contain the following statements:
1) the flocks were inspected by a veterinarian within thirty (30) days preceding the date of importation;

Anyone have experience importing adult waterfowl?
