Has anyone grown mangels for chickens or other livestock?

How did it do? Which variety did you use.

New an elderly gentleman who grew mangles for his milk cow. THey looked like large, white turnips to me. He would take a chair out into his garden where the mangles had been pulled up, and with a knife slice each into quarters and leave it on the ground to dry out in the sun. Once they were pretty dry, they were dumped into a little building and he fed some to the cow all winter.
