I am looking at getting 2 signs for the girls for 4-H this year.
The ones I have seen are engraved wood, childs name with a calf head beside it? Then chains down to a white board cased in wood to write this year's projects on. (Calf name, etc.)
Ever seen anything like that? Willing to try it? Cost?

It seems to me, that quite a while ago DSSR posted a some pictures of a sign she made with a chicken on it. I think it was engraved, with the engraving painted so it really stood out. She does absolutely beautiful work. Such a talented lady!

I thought so too Silkiebantam, but the ones I have seen recently are just painted on the wood.

I have a bearutiful engraved sign from DSSR. The engraved wood has been painted and the whole piece has been professionally and artistically done.

You can't go wrong with DSSR's signs. I am thinking of having her do a farm sign for my front gate.

Nope, I have never made anything that is just painted, EXCEPT the egg crates, I painted those, not carved. Everything else is carved Laughing

I Think I know what you're talking about Hidden. If I had something to go off of, I could most certainly do some! Any sign youve seen pictures of is indeed carved. Pictures dont really get the depth to show though. You can feel it and see it in person! Also depends on how deep I go. I usually go shallow for most things, but can go up to 1/2" deep pretty much if needed. Wink

Cool DSSR, I was fooled by the pictures I guess. Embarassed

The one I have seen was basically a name sign with the persons first and last name on it. A nice cloverleaf would be a nice touch since it is for 4-H.
Then a thin chain down to another board, I thought at first it was a white board but then realized it was actually a board with a removable name plate (Like one on an office door). That way they can put the calf's name and info each year.

I have searched and searched this am for pictures and such an just can't find them. I wish I would have taken a picture of the fellow's sign at the district fair last year....

I am guessing a nice sized name plaque would be about 8" by 24". Done in pine would be nice, or even if you had some large slabs for the rustic feel?
Let me know prices and if you have any ideas, or if you dont understand my explination.

My good friend was in 4-H and says he still has his sign just like that, so he said hed borrow it to me to go off of. Id have to take a good look at it before I could give a quote. The bottom bit sounds perhaps a bit complicated, Ill have to see. He also says that theres supposed to be a spot on the name part on the top that you put a sticker for 4-H. I geuss each location has its own and its supposed to go on there? When I get his Ill try to get a camera to take a pic. You should see if there is supposed to be a spot for a sticker or not etc. And if theres any 'set' sizes theyre supposed to be. Im pretty confident I could do this fairly easily.

That is exactly what I was thinking.
I will ask the 4-H leader if there is anything specific they need on the name plates.
The bottom one like I said would need to be left empty, I could fix up the name plate slider myself if you like to change the calf name every year.

Ya I can do that sort of thing easily. The ONLY issue I really have right now is I dont really have the tools to make it fancy shaped. I have a router, but no router table yet. In my past experiences, Im not very good with routering edges free hand. I can most certainly try my best, router 100 peices of scrap for practice lol.

Well talk Hidden. When would you need these by? I should be able to do them for about $40-$45 each. Only thing I dont know is the cost of the chain, I think its fairly reasonable. Ill look next time im in Co-op.

Well I just talked to the 4-H leader and I guess when they move into a beef project, they make their own signs so they all match as a club.
So just the sign with the calf picture, their name, and then like I said just a plain routered bottom panel I can put a name holder on to switch out I think would work. Find out the price of the chain and let me know a total cost on 2 of them.
