I have given up on my buff orpintons. 2 hens have gone broody but have no eggs to sit on and I haven't gotten one fertilized egg. A freind gave me 2 speckled sussex eggs and I threw them in the bator. They were due to hatch today so 3 days ago I put them in the other bator to hatch. Of course I couldn't leave them alone and opened it each day to listen. I held the eggs to my ear and you could hear scratching in the eggs. I did not spray water or add water or adjust the humidity at all. Today I woke up to cheeping and Ihave 2 chickies. One is yellow with a touch of gold and the other is black with yellow belly and wing tips. Does that sound like what speckled sussex chicks are supposed to look like?
So i guess they'll hatch no matter what the humidity is and whether or not you bug them . I just wish my orps would have given me chicks . I am really bummed out about that.

Do your orps have excessively fluffy bottoms? You may have to pluck the area to make sure there is "contact".

Darn.

I know how you feel. My Cornish haven't laid a fertile egg yet. At least they are not going broody.

I do not pluck my cochins nor my buff orpingtons butt ends and never have and never will. I have close to 100% fertility in both breeds. Go and take a really close look at the cloaca kiss (mating) you will be surprised at how bare that cloaca really is Razz . Maybe, just maybe, some birds are so butt fuzzy plucking is required, but honestly....I have some very fluffly butted birds and there is not an issue with flesh meeting flesh in that area, oops, just a little too graphic for some maybe, but that is me. Earth, wind and fire -- go watch very closely the cloaca kiss on a fluffy butted bird, you might be surprised at what you see Very Happy Shocked Cool . The cloaca is quite an extension of flesh pushed out from that oriface! Have an awesome day, CynthiaM.

Uh...I think we're all missing the point here.

The point, if I am correct, is this was a DRY HATCH!

No fussing, measuring, referring to the manual, testing, keeping the lid closed, agonizing.

No, these eggs were tossed in the bator with a devil-may-care attitude. The lid was opened whenever, without regard to loss of precious humidity. They were handled at will, or not, whatever, who cares, who's watching anyway? AND THEY HATCHED! Rasilon, I am doing the happy dance for you! bounce

NExt time I need a witness in the long and tiresome debate about humidity, I will call upon Rasilon who can testify that a healthy disregard for the 'rules', resulted in two chicks from 2 eggs. That's 100% success!

BUT...if these chicks are mutts, it may account for how well they did under less than perfect hatching conditions. Hybrid vigour kicks the stuffing out of purebreds any day! Oh yeah, them's fighting words. Hee hee hee tongue
