Being Remembrance Day, and knowing I had relatives in both world wars, I did a little more research today. I pulled this one from the London Gazette after my great grandfather received the Military Cross;

Lt. Harvey Huston, Sparling, 7th By., 2nd
Bde., Can. F.A.
For conspicuous gallantry and resource
while acting as battery leader during an
attack. His battery came under heavy shell
fire, six horses being killed, and the drivers
wounded, and his own horse killed under him.
By his coolness and leadership, order was
quickly restored and the battery pushed forward
with little loss of time. He did consistent
good work until wounded later in the
operations.

I thought it pretty interesting to find a write up on him in a paper from way back then.

Well that is really a wonderful bit of family history to find! What a great feeling to have uncovered a write-up about your great grandfather's brave actions.

I had severals uncles in WW II. More than a couple were in radio communications. One was injured in Holland when a wall fell on his arm. My father over the years said little about his life before meeting my mother at Sunnybrae in 1943. Before joining the Canadain Air Force he was in the British Army and stationed in Singapore. Last week I researched the miltary activities of Britain in Singapore during the time my father was likely stationed there. It seems Britain had two countries they consisted threats after WW I. One was the US and the other was Japan. Singapore was Britain's military base in case action was needed against Japan. After his tour in the British Army my father moved to Canada and joined the air force. He had military training so he was put in charge of a mechanic's crew (luckily he was in charge of the crew and not a mechanic). He was stationed at Gravelborg, Bella Bella and Pat Bay in Canada.

My wife's father was a Dutch farm boy during WW II. The German army would take such boys to work on the railways which were bombing targets. He was put in hiding during the war.

Hillbilly, beautiful to hear, now isn't that just a nice piece of family history. There are so many things that are genetic....I bet you follow in his footsteps. I seen a picture of you on a horse, and that conjured up some cool thoughts about your personality Cool . Nice to hear this stuff, have that most awesome and great day, sunshine in our souls, CynthiaM.

I was searching the archives, trying to find of picture of him on his horse in the war. I knew most of this information, but had never run across the newspaper clipping before. It was a good day to run across that.
