It got pretty darned cold last night. I went back outside after dinner at 11pm last night hoping to still bring in some more veggies before the freeze really settled in and everything was already frozen solid. This morning, there was a solid layer of frosty white all over everything everywhere!
When I went out this morning when the plants finally started thawing out so I could continue the harvest with the cold hardy herbs and veggies, I was pleasantly reminded of one of the little silver linings to the first really hard freeze of the year. All the frost tender herbs which suffered their season ending death last night when their cell walls burst, let out the most wonderful aromas this morning when they started thawing. All around me while I picked were aromas of cilantro, thyme, dill and others!
Sure cheered me up!
The other silver lining is that now that everything's fried in the field, in about two weeks we can take a few months of just working regular hours! I know most people get pretty depressed when it starts freezing at the end of the year, but we breathe a sigh of relief. One more year successfully survived!
