I have not been in the birds a lot of years... but in my humble experience NO ONE sells sick birds on purpose ... I have had my share of learning the hard way how to transport birds from small chicks to older chickens turkeys etc.... I have used any casualties as a learning experience.. I once was refunded for something that was my fault as I didnt realize that birds needed so much ventilation in a box..... if 3 holes are good then 6 are better... ( a couple good lesson learned) but I was reimbursed anyway which I didnt expect.... I tell you it wont happen again. I have found that all the Poultry people I have met have been more then honest and upfront with me. I cannot say that anyone I have ever delt with did me wrong. Stuff happens that is uncontrollable......A wise old man once told me years ago... " if you dont have them, you cant lose them!! "

Todays Society seems to always want to blame someone else for anything wrong or bad .. no one wants to take the blame.... I still blame my mother for my eating problem..... she taught me to do that birth !!!

But all said, Honesty is the best policy...
Ok, I will go away now .....

Speaking from a seller's point of view, I agree with those of you that believe small poultry breeders care deeply for building a good, solid reputation and would never knowingly sell a sick chicken. They also care deeply for the poultry they raise and go to great lengths to ensure they have a good healthy start.
Communication is key. When selling chicks I provide a sheet of instructions on how to care for them. I also include a list of common poultry diseases and symptoms to watch for. There is also a disclaimer that states I am not able to offer refunds or health guarantee. There are just too many factors that are out of my control once they leave my farm. However, I also encourage the buyer to call me if they have any concerns or problems, as I would handle that on an individual basis. No one has called me after buying chickens, so I take that as a good indication that they have been satisfied.

I dont offer a warranty but I always am very friendly and ask the buyer to contact me if they have any problems at all, I won't foot a vets bill but I would offer to have a bird back to treat or will offer to look at the bird and offer free medication from my own med cupboard - luckily that has not happened yet!

For birds travelling further away I always provide adequate boxes and check that the vehicle used to transport is suitable but due to the stress of travelling I would be reluctant to exchange any sick birds but would take it on a case by case basis

I'd not offer anything for sale if I had a sickness problem in any of my birds but know plenty of people who do and make a lot of money

I would assume that there is no way of giving any sort of insurance other then what you see is what you bought ? If anything 24 hours would be sufficant , by then you should notice something , but then again you are not in control of anything so I guess it's up to the seller to decide if there is something that needs to be done . Most people look over there stock and if they like what they see the will buy it , any concerns would be dealt with at this point ..............my two cents worth , now back to regular issues .
