think it is happening!!! we might be in the first stages of thawing out. don't want to say "spring" exactly and can't say it is going to continue but last night it stayed above zero all night and we had rain at about 9pm. this is exciting. the roof is sliding off in huge chunks, road is slippy sloppy . . . things are changing out there. thank goodness for four wheel drive. hurry on over to BC my sweet tomato seeds! (ordered from Alberta by snail mail).

I hope we are done! We were almost 90% melted a few times then hot with more snow. I dont remember having this much still at this time of year since we moved here 10 years ago.

Funny I always seem to judge the spring in relation to the year my son was born (7 years ago on 15th).

I was technically on "bed rest" with high blood pressure but I managed to have all my horses paddocks melted and cleaned up before he was born. NOw if its not done before his birthday I get all crazy!

Spring! Spring! We need you!

giving birth is one of those moments that just doesn't go unnoticed - no wonder we connect the dots to all other things going on at that time. It was BIG. two times I had that experience and I have vivid associations for both. People sometimes die in that process, there is no two ways about it, you are so focussed it would not matter if there was an atomic whatever being detonated in the room next door, at the point of delivery it really doesn't matter! Have a wonderful 7th birthday on the 15th :-).

Seems a lot of snow out there right now too, we had weird lack of snow for long time, right up until after Christmas and then it made up for lost time. Every year winter has been different, this was our 6th winter in Canada and each one has been way different. I expect the unexpected now. And man am I ready for the spring to be here, roll on!

We had afoot of snow overnight to add to the half foot we had during the day. We were doing the school trip with gkids this morning but came close to a snow day. I spent a good part of the day riding the quad plowing narrow paths to haul hay and firewood. Like our friends to the south the weather is showing signs of a big melt in the next week as a "pineapple express" moves into the interior. The peppers are up in the window greenhouse.

yeah, sorry, feel like a bit of a skite  Embarassed . It is still dripping but right on zero so think by morning there will be frozen ice again - drive was in quite a slushy state this morning, by 4.30pm it was really yuck so I borrowed the neighbours trackie and ploughed all the slush away so my husband would be able to drive the car up to the house without fishtailing in to a tree! nasty nasty. I did a 180 in to a snow bank in our little 4WD truck on way to pick kid up from the bus today, driving too fast (still learning patience  tongue  ). Told my boy who informed me that this is the most dangerous time of the year on the roads and I guess I have to agree. Better to prang into the bank than slide over the cliff.

I want the melt to stay, stay until there is nothing more to melt. Hope it rolls on for everyone too. -30! no no. and no more snow.

We are experiencing a MASSIVE melt here!  I think the weather has a bit of a split personality this year.  Not going to enjoy the mud but I'm going to LOVE open water for all the critters ....I dislike hauling kettles of boiling water to the coops every morning to thaw the chicken water. Horses have started to shed too! Oh the hair.... cheers

I wish it were melting. Well, not a big sudden melt, we haven't had much snow just non stop freezing - hard to find water for the livestock. We are very worried about a drought this summer, all our water comes from the mountains above us and they are looking very bare.

Chickens laying up a storm though and piglets due any day... AND clocks go forward this weekend - can you believe it?

Looks like we're in for a melt here soon too. We had to string a second hotwire on top of our perimeter fences because snow so high and hard packed that our dogs and neighbourhood dogs just walked over fences and first string of hotwire UGH! I really hope it doesn't melt too quickly or it's going to be ugly  Evil or Very Mad  My youngest has a cross country ski trip on monday so maybe we'll be snow shoeing instead LOL

Just talked to my brother in N.C., and it is snowing, sleeting, raining and any thing else it can do there now. The power has been out most of the day and he said there was at less 2 inches of ice on everything. It is so wet there is no place for the water to go. Roads that has been used for years are sinking out of sight.
Most years they would have part of the gardens planted and flowers would be starting to bloom. By Easter there is always flowers everywhere.
So I keep thinking going south would be great, I'm re-thinking that now.

We live in a valley, we live close to the Shuswap River, we get lots of snow, we have accumulated about 38 inches of snow. It has been above zero for four nights now, the days above zero by about 3. The day before yesterday the spring switch flipped and daytime temperature was about 7. Yesterday the snow began the big melt. The temperature rose to about 10. Snow is melting and we are going to be in pumping mode very soon. The driveway all the way up the property to our home will be a lake in about 2 days, that lake is beginning. I will have the pump going for hours each day to keep up with moving water from the driveway, which will come from the horse arena, to the east side of the driveway, which is a 40 acre field, that is slightly lower than the driveway and arena. I have already began the process of diverting melting snow from the arena from coming into my chick grow out coop. I saw green grass infront of the main chicken coop yesterday, so did the chickens Smile . Today promises another day of warmth. We sat outside and had a brew after our working day outside with our Daughters. We have sun all day, from sunup to sundown and it warms the world here, it is beautiful. It was nigh to t-shirt weather, but when that sun began to think about going down, on went the jackets again. I think the switch has turned. It seems that is the way of life in this valley, fall switch on, spring switch on. There is no switch for summer or winter, they seem to meld with fall and spring. Fall came so fast and furious I did not get my parsnips, nor my carrots out of the garden, but I can see in about a week, that snow cover will be gone and I can go and see what the vegetables that have grown all winter in a garden are like. Never experienced that before and hope it is good. Have an awesome day, CynthiaM.

Melting nicely here, but there is a lot of snow to melt. We've had years where all the snow was gone by the end of February.

Well my ducks are happy snow melting into their house so they
can play and make muck.
We have been in the plus for two days now with +3 this morning.
And go figure three days ago the water line to the barn hydrant
froze, so now I have to pack water.
But I have been spoiled for the past ten years so for a month or
so I am sure I can handle it. Until I slosh a bucket down my leg
into my boot then I might complain.
Anyway hope the thaw continues but not to fast that people flood.

Heda, i am sorry to hear this.  We have one of the highest snow packs in a while.
it is melting like crazy, yet the ground is still frozen so there is no where for all of that water to go. We have just trenched around the sheep feeding area, and around the garage and house.  We are expecting lots of flooding

That's amazing - didn't realize there was record snow pack elsewhere - a mixed blessing this time of year I guess.

It is raining here but snowing on the mountains so perhaps we will make up for the lack of snow yet. Creeks are rising, and where it isn't muddy it is ice. Big gale force south wind melting everything. Highland Cattle and Shetland Sheep totally unfazed by wind and rain, Arab horses completely miserable along with Anatolian Shepherd.

Three sows about to farrow lying in deep straw in the barn, sighing deeply, glad to be out of the wind.
