Snow bombs. Snow bombs are when a big collections of accumulates in things like 100 - 200 ft trees. And the it falls in a big clump, often bringing down branches with it.

My hen house was snow bombed, and the house collapsed. Flattened. Final tally is of 70 hens, I've lost 20...but I have 50 that appear to be unharmed. I had to rig a dog kennel as a sled to move them to a new house, and drag it through the snow, avoiding my own snow bombs.

Oh, and the island is shut down because of the massive amount of snow. And we've had no power for two days, no idea when it will be back.

I am still planning on doing the trip to Alberta, but have to deal with this first. Sad still a chance ill be on time...

ahhh Islandgal, what a run of it you are having. I heard on the radio yesterday that schools are closed on the island, thought of you. I know you are not on Victoria but that would most certainly mean all other islands too I imagine. if I weren't many hours drive and ferry trips away I'd come help you. may it be the last pain in the butt you have for a good long while, actually, lets not put a time frame on it!

Oh my gosh! I am sorry to hear all this. It sounds like you have another place to house your remaining hens. That's good, but what a lot of heartache and work! Take care of things, Alberta can wait.

I'm really sorry this happened. What a loss. Poor hens. How can you even prepare for that? You can't be prepared for EVERYTHING, and where you live, snow bombs is just not on the radar.

Hoping you get things back to normal soon. xo

I still have to go to Alberta to deal with a family matter, so might as well make it a trip...

I got more done today than I expected. AND I found 12 more hens alive!!! I am exhausted from digging them out, and my hands are like sandpaper as much of the digging was delicate and wirh my hands, But so happy I found more. I went back there to start cleaning up and could hear one...then more. I couldn't believe that some of them were alive, as they could barely breath !! There were some alive only because the body of one that died was beside them.

I got all the hens moved, and you know I almost swear I was more stressed than them ..I still got 9 lovely eggs today. And as soon as they were in the new house, they started laying and dust bathing and all seemed happy. I don't like this "chicken house"...it's in a bad place, gets too hot In the sun, and has bad stories- one with mink killing the chickens, the other with a raccoon. After loosing the flock twice the previous pwners gave up on chcikens. AND it doesn't have a run, as the birds used to free range here. But it's good for a couple of weeks, and tomorrow I will fence off the garden and cover the garlic and make a roost and they all seem happy with it.

I would love to have a hot bath, but we still don't have power. So instead I'm melting white snow and hailing firewood.

After today I need a holiday!!!

You are a 21st century pioneer.  If anyone deserves that hot soak in a tub it is you.  I admire your strength, courage, determination and stamina, and above all your serenity.  Bless you mam, and may the worst of this ordeal be behind you.  I applaud you. Stand up and take a bow.

Oh man, what a bummer. I'm glad you found more hens alive....hopefully there will be more yet. And that your power comes back on soon. That is the worst in winter... Cold good thing for wood heat! Hope stuff starts looking up, spring is coming... flower
