Fingers crossed (and my toes too) one of the eggs under our broody hen has activity.... today we might have our very first chick!   I am told to resist the urge to "help"......  apparently, good old Momma Nature can handle it!  Wouldn't you know it, it's COLD again!

Not a bator, a mumma hen! The best.
And yes, ABSOLUTELY resist the urge to "help".

Thought I would share some of the cuteness. Of the 9 eggs she started only these 2 made it. 2 were clear and the rest had stopped developing at various stages. One other egg made it to the pipping stage and then stopped. That was heart breaking. Poor little thing  Sad

It's so sad, and so hard to understand, why some make it all the way to the pipping stage, and then. . . die.
I've had that happen many times, and always feel awful. But that's the way it is. Rejoice in the ones who survive.

Ah beautiful, well at least there are 2, one would be lonely. The chicks in the grass are beautiful. It looks like wheat grass growing or some kind of grain growing, very pretty against the buff. I used to love to see my buffs in the alfalfa field when it was short, buff and green are beautiful together. have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.

We have TOO much snow also....WAY TOO MUCH.... so tired of winter! The green stuff is sprouted grain.  My chicken crazy daughter put together  a fodder system so the birds have fresh sprouted grains all winter, she also has a meal worm farm on the go so they have fresh bugs.  We have very happy chickens!

Ok...that is a ridiculously cute picture in the sprouts! Meal worm farm...interesting... I've bought meal worms that turned to beetles before...but how do you get the beetles to lay eggs and have them hatch to complete the cycle? My chickens would love that!!

Farmer Bob, I have no idea how she does it. My job is to smile an indulgent smile and make a little more room in the basement.  Wink  I know they like to be in the dark and quite warm. They eat carrots, bran and oatmeal. There are lots of great how to videos on youtube.

I am pretty sure there is a member called Wolfbird(??) on here who knows a lot about mealworms. Sounded very switched on about them.
