A thread that Omega Blue Farms had about the chicks and the eating fowl started me to thinking. I use a food saver system for vacuum sealing all my eating chickens. But, those bags are rather cumbersome. After looking at a beautifully shrink wrapped chicken of Omega's and the comments which ensued, really got me to thinking that this is a superior way to preserve the birds in the freezer. So that got me to internet searching. I came up with a site that is very good with intricate instructions on how to prepare the bird. Looks like a whole lotta work, but I think the end product is nice. But...the bags are very expensive from what I can see, and through all my searching, for poultry shrink bags, particularly poultry shrink bags, could not find a Canadian supplier. Maybe I just did not look hard enough. I know for a fact this year that I am going to have many, many cockerels that will be heading to the abattoir. I am pretty sure too, that I will be selling these excess birds after processing visit, cause really, how many in a year can one eat. And I know both my breeds, most of the males, at about 24 weeks make a very decent sized table fowl, in the range of about 4 pounds, usually a little more than four, barely below four (but if there are below four pounds, those are soup birds). Government inspected, so totally legal to sell to public. I am excited and hoping for a year with lots of males,  Laughing . So, is the question at hand -- is there a supplier in Canada for poultry shrink bags? I see American sites do sell them to Canada, but there would be charges, of course, as we go through customs, I would imagine and additional charge to Canada, right wrong? I don't know, I can just imagine. So...where do we get the bags in Canada? Not having to travel through the border? Have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Spruceburnranch (Donna) was discussing these on ACE a few months back. She got hers here.

Yes, it is a US site, but I would suggest talking to Donna to find out what the true cost was. It may be cheaper and easier than finding a Canadian source.

CYnthiaM, Briteland in Vernon carries (or used to!) a large selection of bags and such. Mind you, they wanted you to buy 1000 of them at a time!

I have always had a hard time finding bags big enough for my home grown poultry. When we helped our crazy buddy butcher his birds last year, the grocery store charged them $1 a bag, which I thought was highway robbery!

I have amassed a collection of huge plastic bags over the years, let me tell you, I keep those things! I wash, bleach, hang dry them and reuse them. Some people have RRSPs, I have a bag collection.

My birds are never as neat and contained as OBF's. Mine are all sprawled out, like they were hit by a bus.
