I need to know is it illegal to transport sheep within BC that DO NOT have ear tags/identification.
And if so...what would the people need to do to tag them? How does ear tags work?

SIte that shows how to apply tag

http://www.wool.ca/uploads/files/PDF/RFID-sheeptags-ASET.pdf

I also think it is illegal for sheep to leave your farm, regardless if they stay in BC, without tags.

From CFIA...

http://www.canadaid.com/producers/documents/Tagging_Sheep_info_for_CCIA_website.pdf

Sheep producers are required by law to comply with the following:

- To apply the approved tags to all sheep and lambs before they leave your farm.
- To keep records of all sheep or lambs entering your flock for breeding purposes.
- To keep records of all sheep 18 months or older leaving your farm, other than those sold directly to a federally or provincially inspected abattoir. This includes animals leaving the premises temporarily (i.e. exhibitions, veterinarian clinic, community pastures).

Haven't had sheep all that long, but have never moved from our property or from someone else's without tags.

The person you are getting them from should tag them for you, not you. Confused.

I will have east friesian crosses (crossed with gotland x blue-faced leicester) in the fall... want a few girls Smile Tagged and all ...

Well the price was sooo right for these ones. East Freisiens are the ones I want yet. What do you ask for them?

I haven't really thought about it. This is our first year with friesans and I only have them as back-up milk supply for the other sheep. Will see how these girls produce.

They would be crosses, so maybe $200 - I'm not really sure.

There was someone in Alberta selling a ton of friesans from I think their dairy. Didn't know what they were asking.

This is the ad from Ropin the Web - I believe near Lloydminister (almost to the Sask border)

Jaclyn, if you find something in Alberta, or closer to Calgary, we often head that way and I go at least once a month to Kamloops to work.. maybe if the stars are all aligned, we can pick up sheep and get them as far as Kamloops for ya.

Hahaha "if the stars align" is pretty much my entire families saying for great unlikely events! Funny to hear another "outsider" say it in conversation to me. Kamloops is still a 12 hour drive for me, but it seems to be a more travelled route for people I know at least! Thanks

I get my tags from www.wool.ca pay for them by credit card and get them in the mail.

I've dealt with similar situations. People desperate to get rid of their sheep but not willing to go to the small effort of tagging them. No deal.

Too bad!

the tags come in a few days in the mail from sheep growers in lethbridge. The cost is pretty reasonable, and the sellor is going to have to tag them for whoever is going to buy them...shouldn't be a deal breaker. sheep cannot leave the farm without rfid tags
