Horsey Daughter goes off to stable to ride today and comes back needing to vent. This was her story.

She goes to the stable where she has two horse who live with a few others in a 15 acre paddock. When she got there they had just been fed, Waaayyy up at the top end of the field, as far from her as they can be. Crap. Just then one of her horses, who was not at the hay, wanders to the gate to see her. Perfect! She bridles him, makes him kneel so she can hop on him (he's tall) then rides him across the field to the other horse she plans to ride, bridles him, and rides him out of the field. He is also tall and to get on she took him to the fence, clucks, he swings himself towards her and she hops on. Her horses kneel, sidle up to objects and stand dead still for mounting.

She saddled Wrecker at her truck. Then went for trail ride with another stable person. He did not put a foot out of line on the trail.

Back at the stable she decided to work him a bit on his flat work in the indoor arena and do a few jumps, so they did that for a little bit until another lady, who was lunging her spastic 2 year old said "Here, pony him for a bit, I have to go make a call." And tossed the lead rope to Daughter. SO she ponied the leaping, snotty, spooking, stupid baby for a while. Wrecker did not put a foot out of place.

In comes a fancy trailer and out comes a HUGE warmblood that was, in daughter's words, a fugly trainwreck. Some parents with more money than brains are having their teen test ride this flinching, head up, bit yanking, lurching and ungainly monster who obviously knows nothing and is way too much horse for a young teen wanting to get into jumping. He has a price tag of $15,000 and is, to Horsey Daughter's eyes, a complete idiot.

She is frustrated. She has Wrecker for sale for $2500. She gets on him cold, no goofing around in a warm up pen with miles of lunging, and RIDES HIM, then in the arena she flat works and jumps him. Then he does a few rounds as pony horse. There is NOTHING this horse can't do while conducting himself like he's sane...and yet no one wants him because he is a plain, brown, banged up off the track TB. She does not fritter and fuss over her horses. They have a job to do and they better do it, dammn it! And they do. THey are outstanding! And here some STUPID people (in her horse opinion, and in the opinion of all horse people, every other horse person is stupid) setting their daughter up for a big, fat FAIL, when Daughter has a little nugget of gold that she can't find a home for.

In my opinion she is not too motivated to sell him since he is proving to be such an all round versatile guy and a love. He is not perfect. He is a racehorse. BUt his progress has been astonishing and his willingness is incredible. Most people do not think he is a TB as he has what she calls 'old style' breeding, heavy bone, almost quarter horse looking chest and butt, but tall.

She has done very well with bringing him along. She is very particular about where he will go. What makes a useless warmblood worth so much more? WIsh I knew the answer, it's not like the horse can read its own pedigree! Sigh...the tough life of a horse person.

You know when Wrecker will be worth more? The moment the economy collapses and fossil fuels are either non existent or people cannot afford them any longer. The moment people cannot afford expensive toys for their spoilt daughters. Then a out of control trophy horse will be slaughtered for meat and Wrecker will be worth his weight in gold.

People who look at $15000 half broke warmbloods for their child are looking to buy a status symbol, not a useful horse.

Horsey Daughter should tell them that she'd be willing to part with Wrecker - FOR THEM - for just $10,000. Might work. Call him a "sport horse".

I was at a conference once, where the speaker talked about horses being priced "emotionally" and how you could do just as much damage to your sale potential by underpricing as you oould overpricing.

Sue, you're freaking me out! I do not want to eat horses. At least not yet.

Kendra, you have an interesting point. Perhaps if she nudged his price up... but her thinking is that the market around here is the pits so if she wants a reasonable chance of selling, she needs a reasonable price. Obviously even if she sells him at $2500, no money is made! I think you need to get at least $10,000 per year of a horses life to make any money on them! I keep trying to convince her that gambling is more profitable.

No Uno, I don't want to eat horses, but there are many in this province that do nothing but eat hay and make poo. It sure is an indulged society that can afford that.

Has that horsey daughter of yours considered making a short video of her horse in all his amazingness and then advertising in a different area where there may be more of a demand and a value to go with it? I am sure that a well worded ad and a video sent would hook this horse up with the right buyer.

It makes me smile to hear Wrecker has turned out so well. Good job to horsey daughter. Give her a big pat on the back for me.

Hillbilly, many people walked past her that day at the auction where she was looking at Wrecker all full of scars and injuries, and told her to not even bother, he was obviously someone else's reject. He looked like a wreck, thus named. But she liked his eye. She took a chance. She loves him.

He hasn't great form over a jump but his eyes are bright his ears are forward, he thinks this is a great sport and would be even more fun if she'd let him GO FASTER! Watching them I understand for the first time what she means when she says some horses have natural scope. He does. He never blunders his strides. He is very body aware. Nojack, bless his heart, while very able to jump takes a lot more work around a course. He does NOT have scope. He will just blast through things quite happily, tripping as he goes. Nojack requires much more guidance because, as she says, he is just not a scopey horse, although he likes to jump and is able, he needs more management. Wrecker, it's all there, the boy has it, he just needs speed regulation. He came with two speeds; starting gate and run like hell.

Thank you, that means a lot. I will tell her.

Sue, I shall NOT take the cover off the BBQ just yet, thanks for letting me off the hook! And you're right, horses ARE an indulgence. (but then again, so are children!)

Well, for what it is worth, I don't think she should sell him. Perhaps she even needs a tattoo of him.

I would drive his price up quite a bit, and list him that way. People seem to think that if the horse is outrageously priced it is the perfect horse He sounds like he is worth more than your daughter is asking for him. I would also do a video of him and post him on YouTube for sale. That is actually where I found my horse and it seems like people sell their horses quite easily on there!

I wouldn't call it "driving up the price". A good, sound horse is very valuable. You also need to know your market. If he is not pretty over fences, he would not make a good hunter, but if he is scopey and so easily ridden, mabye a junior or amateur jumper. If you want to sell him as purely a pleasure horse, your price will be lower. All depends on what he can do.

Personally if she loves riding "why" sell him? How many horses do the things for you, that you just

described? Not many. How many horses that are tall will bow for you to get on? Virtually none. Either

keep your "gem" of a horse, or up the price, it's way too low. Do a video of him bowing to get on etc.

But usually a horse like that is a "keeper". Depressed you completely now didn't I. Lol.

Tell your daughter congratulations on her exellent training. cheers

Remember Uno was considering a tattoo a while back? Well, don't tell anyone but she got that tat, and she chose a picture of Wrecker. Sadly, the choice of tattoo artist was not as wise.

Thank you. Lady Leghorn, she does love riding him and he has made great strides.

BCKev, for goodness sake, take an antihistamine, get your cheque book out and call us! What are you waiting for?
