The sheep board here has a rebate program coming to an end and I am just looking for feedback on these products before I decide what I want to do.
The Shearwell RFID tags are the ones mandated for sheep right now, they are also coupling it with the Farmworks program which gives very detailed records for your flock, and the reader works with the program so you scan and note in the barn or field and it goes into the program on your computer in your house once you get in. Saves a lot of double entry.
We are not a large flock but hope to grow over time, so now would be a good time to get this product with 70% back from the government, but is it a good program, easy to use and useful?

There is a similar program for the RFID reader for cows. I am mulling it over too. If I do I want to get the software that goes with it, and the weigh scale bars.

For sheep I use the shearwell tags and so far really like them. Nice and small and light for my little shetland ears.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone else has experience.

I talked to the sheep board about it, and also a purebred producer I know that just got it this summer.
So far she is not impressed with the software, although it will speed things up in the field it has nothing for her purebred records like the program she already uses.
I looked at her program (Ranchmanager) and it looks really neat, spent most of my day on it playing around in the demo. A person can get the allflex tag reader to scan tags but it is not as nice as the reader/computer system the sherwell has. The shearwell one is a tag reader, but also a computer built in so you can enter all your data in the field and then download it to your program when you get back to the office.
I am still on the fence for my small flock, just hoping the sheep board will convince the government to extend the program beyond Jan and I can get more of a feel for it before I decide.
