Hi

Just wondering if anyone is going to have Polish there. I am looking for a Golden Laced polish hen and a Silver laced polish roo to take an exciting all paid trip to beautiful sunny Newfoundland. Would really appreciate help in finding these birds if you know of anyone who has some.

Well birds are consigned, and today I am starting to make boxes.

Tonight I plan on giving all birds heading to the auction a dose of Ivermectin as a precaution. I did find a few lice on Big Mama, whom I will never sell. Very Happy Even though she and the rest of my black orps are in their own area, I'd rather not chance sending a bunch of lice covered chickens to auction.

Like I have mentioned before I am a very honest person, and some may think it's odd that I mention things as this, but I think others would appreciate truth and honesty when dealing with birds.

No way in heck or high water would I intentionally send a sick bird to auction, So far everyone whom is being sent is in good health.
I have them all on medicated water to boost immune systems and to help deal with the shock of going to auction.

Today everyone got some pumpkin as a treat as well

I personally feel that it's the right thing to do, even when attending an auction, to make sure you are only bringing healthy birds, keep back anything that you suspect may be sick.
This will be my first time heading to Popwa as a consigner, I have bought birds from there in the past, with no issues but this in my first time running birds through. Only healthy birds are heading off to auction.

With that being said,

Would it be over kill for me to bath my consigned birds? It's not like they are filthy, just is it recommended or is this over kill for an auction??

Just want to make sure that I have healthy birds, for their sake and mine. I would rather people recognize the care and attention I Jonny Anvil put into rearing and raising poultry.
I would like to be considered a respectable and honest poultry raiser.

Cheers!

Jonny

Very commendable of you Jonny!
You do what you have to do so that you feel you presented your birds as best as they can be!
We will be bathing a couple of our roosters just so they look a little more presentable.
When they're in the 'rooster' group its hard to keep them looking thier best.
See you there!

I agree with Mel. You do what you have to do to make your birds as presentable as possible. It reflects on the seller and the quality of birds.
I have been turned off of auctions because people do tend to sell their culls there, not that all are bad birds but not many people take the time to make sure they are healthy and well presented. I have noted at a few auctions people that have nice cages, healthy birds and their information on their boxes. Those are the people I will jot down and contact at a later date for birds.
So if you feel you need to bathe a bird to make it more presentable, then do so!

I would not bath them. That can cause chilling and stress etc. I think that if you had a really good dust bath for them that they would be quite clean for the sale. <

Sounds good to me,

Just wanting to get a feel for how others prepare and what they go through for the auction, I mean after all it is one's representation of their stock, and themselves as a keeper/breeder indeed.
Arctic makes a great point, bathing them unless they are poop covered, isn't ideal when I think about it. They have been dust bathing for the most part and in the long run bathing an otherwise healthy and clean chicken could be counter productive.

From the looks of things the only ones who will need some clean up are the ducks I have consigned, but then again wait a bit and then they will be clean, 30 seconds later MUD BATH... As for the ducks fresh water on some clean grass and away they go!LOL
For the Chickens at least so far everyone is looking good, just a few more to look at. I spend hours each day a few times a day with my birds, as I am not working and stuck at home, I am out checking on them on a regular basis.....and have had plenty of time to sit back and choose whom I personally want to keep for my 2013 breedings.

I wouldn't say that I am sending culls to the auction as I don't have any cull birds really to speak of in my breeding programs at this time.... This year was the first time I got more ruthless with culling. Getting rid of anything that I did not want in my breeding program, really culled back the Black Orps and finally got the eye color I have been far after.

We have consigned two pairs of Buff Orpingtons!!! These are from the youngsters that we got from KathyS earlier this year. With 4 Roos and 8 hens, we decided too keep just two roosters and 6 hens. Split them in to two Breeding Quads.
I can say 100% for sure that these Orps are NOT culls... they are some of the finest Orps I have ever owned and wouldn't want them to go to the table, so we decided to take them to Popwa hopefully they will find a great home!

Thanks everyone for engaging in conversation, it's nice to see where others sit in regards and I hope that this info comes in handy to someone who is new to this...

Really looking forwards to Sunday... hopefully I don't have to run out of there like I did last year.. damn stomach.

Arctic saw a bit of that... i think!

I had to look twice to identify the flash that went by me last year!

I would bath feet and legs if they were goopy, but unless they REALLY needed it I wouldnt do bodies. If the birds are in a clean dry area with a good dust bath I think they would look great without the stress of a bath.

Definitely I agree with the preemptive meds and paracite treatment. Less bugs = less stress, and of course the courtesy to others. Very professional and thoughful.
